Default Newbie with a 6750 and a ton of questions

morning all!

just recently picked up a 6750 for giggles just to try out a blackberry.
Obviously I've also come loaded with a few questions...

From poking around on the 6750, I found out that I'm still running OS3.3
Bell Mobility is offering 3.6.1....... I've downloaded the new OS and tried it with the desktop upgraded to 4.? When I get everything loaded up, I lose SMS ability with the 6750 and it then requires a password which I can't disable in the options.

When I remove the OS and go back to desktop 3.3, and reinstall everything, I get the SMS back, the ability to disable the password, however I lose the ability to browse the internet.

My question is how do i get the best of both? internet, SMS, and the ability to disable the password? Do I need to download the same desktop version as the OS version? Or id this something in the OS for Bell Mobility?
