Unhappy Trouble with Enterprise Server Express Install:

Please Login to Remove!

I recently ordered the free version of your Express Server to be downloaded into an Exchange environment. I went through the entire preparation and recommended steps according to the Blackberry Enterprise Server Version 4.1 for Microsoft Exchange Getting Started Guide.

I created the BESAdmin account and gave it all the security policy permissions, etc., that were required for a domain server.

I finished all of the prep work, and then proceeded to remove the current old version of MSDE that was installed for printer plotter software. This was to insure that the new version would be installed in its place form the downloaded install package.

There were problems removing the MSDE application from add/remove programs menu. I am currently downloading information to completely remove this due to the issue that came up with the install as I proceeded forward and the install package said that the new MSDE version was installed successfully locally.

However when I got to the part in the install where it needs to locate the database, and I am supposed to check ‘local’ and ‘windows’ authentication, the ‘local’ check box was grayed out and the only option was ‘remote.’ This confused me and this is where the installation stopped (failed). Each time I tried to continue, it could not locate the data base. Obviously because it was looking ‘remotely’ and I could not check the ‘local’ box.

I am guessing that this occurred because the old MSDE version was not successfully completely removed.

My question to you is this. Do I need to uninstall the Enterprise Server Express Software that I began to install, completely remove the old MSDE version and start again? Or is there a registry fix to point the installation gui to the locally installed version of the MSDE and I can continue to manually remove the old version from the registry according to Microsoft’s instructions.

I am willing to start over, but the installation itself is painstakingly slow, and I would like to pick up where I left off if possible, however perhaps the new database engine did not actually successfully install as it said that it did, and starting over is the only option.

Can anyone who may have gone through this advise?
