Commodore 64 Cheap Talk GI SPEECH SYNTHESIZER SP0256A-AL2 Text to Speech:
Commodore 64 'Cheap Talk' Speech Synthesizer PCB Assembly with instructions for programming as shown. The
famous SP0256A-AL2 is a vintage 80s speech processor chip that was made
by General Instruments and made available to the public then at Radio
Shacks along with the Code to Speech Processing chip which was sold
separately at the time. The SP0256A-AL2 has an addressable Allphone
table to create sounds that last milliseconds and allows you to string
them to create words. By using a string of Octal bits to the address
bus you can create any word. From my experience the voice is male and
sounds natural. If you have ever played with the Mattel Intellivision
voice module, this is the family of ICs used for those.
The SP0256A-AL2 is a Speech Processor that is able to provide:
• Stand Alone Operation with Inexpensive Support Components
• Wide Operating Voltage
• Word, Phrase, or Sentence Library, ROM Expandable
• Supports L.P.C. Synthesis: Format Synthesis: Allophone Synthesis
• Simple Interface to Most Microcomputers or Microprocessors
