This is a complete Stepper to Servo conversion kit for a single axis. Order one per axis converted. Combined with your DC motor, power supply, heatsink, and cables, it is a drop in replacement for a standard Pololu format stepper driver as found on RAMPS, grbl, or other common motion control systems in 3D printers, small CNC machines, etc... You can see a sample of it operating in this main photo here show a sample system built using these electronics controlling a DC gear motor powered from a Makita power tool battery which accepts command via a wifi adapter. It moves nicely with updated firmware. The motor, box, battery, encoder and motor cables, RAMPS/Arduino and wifi adapter are NOT included in this listing.The block diagram shows the components of any servo system. The 3rd photo shows the kit as supplied, with instructions and bagged components. This is an electronics kit, you must solder it together.The remaining pictures show the components in their finished state and mounting information for the encoder.
The set contains:
1. BOB PID Servo Controller. This takes in step and direction signals from the Pololu adapter cable, and motor position data from the ENC2 encoder and produces a motor drive signal for the DRV8701. It is tuned (as all servo drives must be) via a TTL serial port using your FTDI or other USB adapter. See the tuning video. Once the tuning is saved, this is no longer required. A built-in bootloader allows firmware updates for additional features in the future.
2. Pololu adapter cable. This replaces the standard Pololu type stepper drivers commonly found on motion controllers like RAMPS, grbl, etc... and conveys the step and direction signals to the BOB PID.
3. ENC2 Non-Contact 4000 CPR Magnetic Encoder. This unique device provides standard quadrature position signals to the BOB PID without actually touching the motor. All you need is one end of the motor shaft exposed to epoxy on the supplied diametric disk magnet. The supplied unit produces 4000 edges per rotation. A 360 CPR version is available to substitute upon request. You will need to make and supply your own cable to connect this as it is generally impossible to place close by and the distance varies greatly.
4. DRV8701 1 HP H-Bridge Motor Driver. 17 Amps at 40 Volts or nearly 1 HP drive. It accepts direction and PWM signals from the BOB PID and drives the motor to the desired position. For a limited time, we will include the cable to connect it to the BOB PID. You will need to supply your own heatsink, power supply and power wiring including the power leads to the motor. It doesn\'t make sense to send cables as the distance from drive to motor varies greatly.Full instructions for the assembly, connection and tuning of the system are supplied in printed form and online.
You will need to supply your own:1. Motor (DC only, up to 17 Amps and 40 volts, although higher can be used at reduced capacity)2. Power supply (to match the motor)3. USB Serial TTL adapter cable (e.g. FTDI friend or CP2012, etc... to tune the BOB PID. Only needed temporarily and only one needed.)4. Shielded cabling for the encoder (4 wire + shield ground, molex kk standard, 6 pin)5. Physical mount for the encoder (a pair of bolts and standoffs will work)
6. Motor / Power wiring (14 to 18 gaugerecommended)7. Heatsink for the driver8. Motion controller (RAMPS, grbl, etc... anything that puts out step and direction signals will work)
9. Miscellaneousmounting hardware, etc...it is an electronics kit... you must solder it together. Servo systems are not simple and do require tuning for the load. We are happy to help, but you must do the work.
