Until theend of the last century, operations to correct Pectus Excavatum PE deformities were largely based on thetechnique described by Ravitch . In 1998, a new technique of minimally invasiverepair of PE (MIRPE) was first de- scribed by D. Nuss to avoid several operative features of themodified Ravitch repair procedure. Today, the MIRPE technique is wellestablished and represents a common used technique . The short operating time,smaller incisions and considerably less dissec-tion has made the MIRPEprocedure very appealing both to surgeons and patients, thereby resulting in alarge increase of the number of patients requesting operative treatment, andconsequently in an increase of the number of PE repairs. However, with thewide- spread use of the MIRPE procedure the character and number ofcomplications has increased. Above all, recent studies report on an increasingnumber of near fatal complications. Additionally, in many cases of PE, thedegree of pectus deformity does not immediately warrant surgery, yet patientsmay benefit from some type of nonsurgical treatment. Other patients arereluctant to undergo surgery because of the pain associated with postoperativerecovery and the risk of imperfect results. Due to these facts, the introductionof the vacuum bell for conservativetreatment of PE has made this alternative therapy a focus of interest ofpatients.
The procedure of applyinga vacuum to elevate the sternum was first used more than 100 years ago.
