My husband and I buy and restore antique sewing machines. They often come to us as part ofan estate, along with other interesting and useful things. This time the sellerof the sewing machine happened to be the daughter and granddaughter ofmachinists, and we ended up with lots of nice tools.
Most of you who are readingthis already know what this tool does, but for the rest of us, here is anexplanation I found on the internet:
“A Planer Gauge is ameasuring instrument consisting of two inclined, adjustable planes that arelocked in place to use as a gauge in setting tool height on shapers andplaners. Using a micrometer, the gauge is set to an exact height and the toolis then brought into contact with the gauge.
Planer gauges can also beused as adjustable parallels, for gap measuring, and with other accessories,such as dial indicators, using tapped holes on the working surfaces of thegauge.\"
The two triangular workingsurfaces slide easily past each other and the knurled thumbscrew holds securely.The photos show a small amount of surface corrosion that does not affect theoperation of this tool in any way. Tool has been marked with a previous owner\'s name (photo three).
