Dedicated to the single task of refurbishing electric-motor and alternator armatures, the ingeniously designed Frank N. Wood lathe was built in two models: the basic B10 and the B15, the latter identical to the former but with the addition of a separate electric motor to drive the undercutter spindle. While, for many decades, it had been common practice to use an ordinary centre lathe for armature work - same makers even offering special kits to make the job easier and other companies providing third-party adaptations - in a busy electrical workshop having a properly set-up, special-purpose machine would have been a good investment.Once the armature was mounted in place - the makers offered a number of accessories to hold those that were awkwardly shaped, extra long or very short while also allowing some to be turned with or without their bearings in place - the front tool holder was adjusted laterally by a screwed rod to the correct position and the cutting tool brought up to the job by turning a screwed ring surrounding its holder. Mounted at the back of the unit, the motor was arranged to slide along a round bar to bring is flat drive pulley into the correct position - the drive from this passing to the job by the simplest possible means: a belt wrapped around the armature\'s core. So that the whole weight of the motor was not taken by the armature, a simple screw-locked support rod was provided that passed through the back of the motor-mount plate to contact the bench - this arrangement allowing the belt tension to be set \"just so\". The undercutter was spun by a round rubber belt that, in order to get the run direction correct, was inveigled into position by being threaded round a pairs of jockey pulleys built into its height-adjustable mounting bracket.The undercutting operation - lowering the height of the mica inserts between the armature segments - would have been done by engaging the rotating cutter to the rear
