Who's in what city, and with what celular provider?

I'm curious to see what service is like in different places. A lot of clients are considering getting blackberrys, and it would be nice to have an idea of what other users are finding in terms of service.

Plus this will help us get to know each other a bit better :)

So:
Where are you located?
Which celular provider are you with?
What blackberry are you using?
In brief, how's the quality of their service? (ie: dropped calls, reception, network errors, etc)

I'll start
Located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada (Just north of the city actually, in the suburbs)
I'm with Telus on the MIKE iDEN network.
Service so far is incredible. I have yet to find a place where my phone does not work. This includes underground parking garages and inside my basement appartment!

San Jose, California area

Nextel, using BB7520.

With SQE 28-35 at home (tower about .3 miles away from home) and at work, Nextel coverage is great where I need it most. Other than that, it's fairly solid in the Bay Area. Out of the providers here, I'd rank it tied in third with SPCS, behind Verizon and Cingular.

jaxon23 06-05-2005 02:33 PM

Foley, Alabama (30 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico)

Nextel is my carrier (currently carrying a Boost Tattoo i860 unlocked for nextel service)

BB7520 will be here wednesday via FedEx

Never had a problem with my nextel service in my area so far and hope to have as good of service with my new blackberry

JDeane 06-05-2005 02:47 PM

Richmond/Washington DC for a few weeks then Chicago for a few weeks, I alternate back and forth for my occupation.

I have a BlackBerry 7290 on Cingular. Cingular just plain sucks, that's the end of my statement on my carrier.

maxcady808 06-05-2005 03:25 PM

Where are you located?

Brighton UK

Which celular provider are you with?

Vodafone

What blackberry are you using?

I had a 7100v up until 3 weeks ago, now I have the 7290

In brief, how's the quality of their service? (ie: dropped calls, reception, network errors, etc)

7100: I had 4 units over 6 months. Vodafone were pretty bad with support for this unit, especially as the first units seemed to have lots of problems. Shops and call centres didn't know anything about the 7100. Lots of dropped calls, lots of network errors, but this was probably down to the hardware and not the actuall network.

7290: Havent had any dropped calls, reception is very good and I've only lost my GPRS connection a couple of times.

Where are you located?
US, The Poconos Pennsylvania (PA)

Which celular provider are you with?
Nextel

What blackberry are you using?
7520

In brief, how's the quality of their service? (ie: dropped calls, reception, network errors, etc)
Service in the poconos at one point was ZERO. Moving from NY, it was hard to deal with and yet i still kept my service. In 2002, Nextel emerged some towers and IIRC all towers were up by late 2003. Service is spotty in the more mountain and valley areas (obviously), but overall the service is great .. and has improved greatly. i know all of the drop zones and they are in some odd areas, but regardless it isnt as bad as many dropped calls i experience in NJ and NY; i dont know why..

Grammer 06-06-2005 08:35 AM

Where are you located?
SE Michigan, about 30-40 mins out of Detroit

Which celular provider are you with?
T-Mobile

What blackberry are you using?
7100t

In brief, how's the quality of their service? (ie: dropped calls, reception, network errors, etc)
Quality is very high. Hardly ever drop calls and my receptions rarely goes past 85.

jwaters 06-06-2005 08:47 AM

Where?
Also SE Michigan, near Howell, which is between Detroit and Lansing.

Which provider?
Nextel - County phone and the DC is a neccesity

Which BB?
7520

Quality of service?
Great. We've been with Nextel for over 5 years and it's getting better. There are a few "dead" spots, but not too bad. We have trouble in the office because of the building structure but will have a BDA installed shortly that will take care of both the Nextel phones and our 800 mhz radios which also have problems with signals.

Verizon. Tampa, Fl. Service has been great so far. I had Alltel, but they did not offer the blackberry to the "general" public and their customer service was horrible. Been with verizon for about two weeks, and I LOVE the blackberry!

Where:
I live in Glendale Arizona USA, I work in Phoenix. (They're right next to each other, just like Scottsdale, Mesa, Tempe, etc.) From the Census in 2000, Phoenix is the sixth largest city in the U.S., by population; city with the second largest population growth in the 1990s (332,062 people); at 474.9 square miles, Phoenix is the fifth largest U.S. city, in terms of land area. (epodunk.com)

Service:
7290 - Cingular Orange

Coverage:
I get pretty decent coverage everywhere I wander down here. From what I understand Cingular is pretty new to the Phoenix market. I do know when I'm down in Scottsdale my coverage is spotty and I frequently spend time in gprs instead of GPRS.

As an aside, I originally purchased this BB when I lived in a suburb of Cincinnati, Ohio. Also Cingular Orange, and the coverage and service was excellent.

Service is HORRIBLE! Customer service is HORRIBLE. Have co-workers with Verizon that are much happier. I keep getting told by Cingular that my unlimited blackberry plan does not cover TCP/IP traffic and I need the laptop plan of $79.95. Stay away from cingular, Verizon or Tmobile is a much better choice for Atlanta.

Coverage is pretty good, but my home is a "dead spot", which is OK because I have a land line and a cable modem. I was on a 47 minute cell phone call the other day, on the 7520 (which I believe holds the signal better than any other Nextel phone I have ever owned, i730, i90, i1000) that started from downtown Manhatten, through the Battery tunnel, accross Brooklyn, over the Verrazanno bridge and halfway accross Staten Island.

Wow!

All I can say is WOW - It's only been one day, and 40 people have replied to this thread! I wasn't expecting anywhere near this level of response.

There's a surprising number of nextel users on here it seems. And from the replies so far, it seems like they have great service in the states. I know the iDEN service i'm on here in Toronto combined with the blackberry is fabulous - the best of any cell phone company I've seen, so it's good to know that the quality level continues in the US as well.

mikealdo: That 47 minute phone call you're describing is insane. I've had longer calls while driving through city traffic and on the highway, but nothing like the tunnel.

Finch: you should checkout Telus's MIKE 7510 or 7520. The few times I've had to call customer service, they've quickly transfered me to the "data department" who were very knowledgable about blackberrys. They had multiple units there with different setups, and can try out anything necessary WITH you still on the phone. Makes it great for problem solving.

Thanks for all your input, and keep the replies coming! It's definately generating some good info for me, and hopefully others will find it useful too. I still find it incredible how many of you have replied so far

We (law firm where I work) use a Good server for all of our BB 957's and we just installed BES 4.x. We are testing my 7100g, a 7290, and an older 957.

So far we like the BES better than the Good. BES gives us a ton of options that the Good server did not.

Nextel 7520

A few dead spots here and there, but overall the service is OK. They need to improve the dead spots. FOr the most part, the service works, just wish they would work on those spots.

We had a major problem here during the hurricanes, as many of the Nextel towers here were affected by the loss of electrical and has generator issues. Its one of the reasons our local sherriff's office changed over service to Verizon.

Coverage is NASTY here. I can't drive 20 miles without loosing a call, reception is sparse. Can't make a call from my LR and I don't have a land Line, I have the dreaded reboot problem. When the contract is up here I come Verizon and a new Samsung i730. The 7100t is an adequate PDA but as a phone it sucks.

Great coverage in my area, although the 7520 with a brand new SIM ran really slow, and would hang up all the time. I popped in an older SIM (7510) and everything works perfectly.

we currently use BES, and are testing GoodLink (are you guys going through MobilityIT?)

I personally like the BES/Blackberry better myself. I am demoing a Sprint PPC6600 Windows Device with GoodLink and I can't stand it.

mediabb 06-15-2005 06:58 AM

Locations and coverage

we have several clients all over .. here's the breakdown that we noticed

NY - Verizon - great coverage in the city and on the trains
Atlanta GA - T-mobile work fine
Ohio - T-mobile works fine
Seattle WA - T-mobile
Flordia - T-mobile
Outside the U.S - T-mobile without a doubt! (y)

Overall if you're looking to save money T-mobile have the best prices with perhaps some calls drop .. not many. T-mobile customer service is GREAT! - They've recently won awards for this - check out the stats online Verizon has a pretty nifty network that really get the job done especially in NY they have no comptetion there besides maybe Nextel (not bad). ( I hear there customer service isn't that great) Cingular I expect big things once their network transformation is complete. Nexel is pretty nifty... specfically the two way (they've got all carriers bet on the feature)

Devices:

#1 - As of now 7290 is the leader.
#2 - As of now 7100t - even though this device I would say isn't for your everday email typing friend it's a sure shot for sleekness and mobility. The speakerphone is what really gives this device an advantage over the 7290.
#3 7230 - By default because of the color display.

I'm open to share as much info as possible with this group. If anyone has any question feel free to ask.

Dawg 06-15-2005 07:26 AM

Good point Dawg, but it wouldn't have given me the details I was originally looking for. I wanted to know about quality with what devices in addition to which carrier.

We can always start another thread with a poll if people are interested.

To everyone else: I'm still amazed by the response this thread has had. It's been extremely helpful for me, and I hope everyone has gotten something out of it too.
It's a great compiliation of carrier/device combos that either work or don't work - Invaluable info for anyone thinking of switching carriers or jumping on the blackberry bandwagon.

Lets keep the responses coming, since the more info available the better the picture becomes on an ongoing basis

Dawg 06-15-2005 02:59 PM

I know that the poll wouldnt have given the results you were looking for, you could have posted that underneath the poll let them post what phone and city then. just would have been cool to see what service is used most with out having to scroll through each post.

BB 7290 with Cingular. I'm happy with the service. I switched from Verizon because I want to be able to send and receive emails outside the US.

Nextel
BB 7510 With a 7520 on it's way

I've been a BlackBerry user since January-ish. My 'Berry has blown ANY Nextel phone I have had out of the water. If start to get a choppy call I just raise the antenna and it's fine. With any phone (i600,i60,i90,i95cl,i730,i830) I wouldn't be able to make a call in my house, let alone the basement. With the BlackBerry I perfect service upstairs, and sporatic service downstairs.

Once you go BlackBerry, You never go back.

I'm in Richmond, Virginia using a Sprint PCS (Red network) Blackberry 7250. Network coverage is awesome and sound quality is very good. One interesting tidbit: Sprint's PRL's prefer analog roaming in some areas, but since this phone is digital-only it will seek a digital signal in those places (unless forbidden by the PRL), so quality of voice service can be considered better on a Blackberry than another Sprint PCS device.

Data is very responsive, and though only available on Sprint's native network (Red side) that in itself covers a lot of ground.

All around good experience.

Sierra Vista, AZ (damn near in Mexico)
T-Mobile
7290
Coverage is great outside. Inside of any building I'm lucky to get 1 bar. For example at work I get full 5 bars. Inside I usally go between 1 bar and no coverage. T Mo seems to be this way everywhere I've been. Pretty good service outside and terrible inside. Even in philly my coverage was spotty in the gallery mall downstairs. Same in NY, on the subways it sucked and at street level it was great.

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada
7100r / 7280 / 7290 (primarily the 7290 for personal use, rest for admin/testing etc)
service provider is Rogers, coverage is excellent in Charlottetown, drops as you head to the north shore, gone completely when I turn into my house.
Rogers tech support is erratic - it's been great or useless, nothing in between!

Chiswick, London, UK

7100v (Vodafone UK) for personal/work use
7100v (BES Vodafone) / 7100x (O2 Internet Mail) for testing/client support

Running on BES 4.0 on Exchange in house

Excellent coverage on Vodafone just about anywhere, even in basement flats and multi-story car parks.

In brief, how's the quality of their service? (ie: dropped calls, reception, network errors, etc) Excellent so far. Occasionally dropped calls as you travel west on the 401 toward T.O and on the 417 north to Ottawa. Worse when travelling by train!

Well, I have two stories. I was with T-Mobile and just recently switched to Verizon. So....
I live in Chicago.

T-Mobile
7100t
$39.99 1000 mins w/ n&w
$19.99 unlimited BB
Outstanding Service. T-Mobile is one of the best. Great call quality and the BB service is very good too. GPRS is a little slow but. Coverage is not as all inclusive as Cingular or Verizon but where they have coverage it is generally great.

Verizon
$79.99 450 min n/w and IN calling and unlimited BB
BB 7250
Signal isn't as strong all over in Chicago like T-Mobile (apparently T-Mobile is #1 in Chicago) but call quality is great and coverage is solid. Data speeds over 1xRTT is considerably and noticably fast tham GPRS on T-Mobile.

I switched to Verizon mainly for national coverage and better penetration in buildings. But I do want to make clear that T-Mobile is an outstanding carrier with great service and CS. To be honest, I'm almost sad to leave T-Mobile but there data just wasn't up to par and I'm not sure where their roadmap for data is going.

Phone service compares with regular cell phone - mostly good. Very few drops but some bad areas. Data seems reliable, but slow. I don't have anything to compare it to except DSL & a regular PC.
