Site going down?

Is the site having problems? I have been getting Database errors when I try to login.

Yes.

Perhaps "Tom" could answer the question.

Re: Site going down?

I suppose he could answer it if he chooses to. Was down, came back briefly and went down again for at least two or three more days.

Hmmmm....

Wonder if he even knew (or cared) that it was down.

Oh well.

Who is Tom?

John Clark 01-19-2014 12:18 PM

Re: Site going down?

He only knew because I finally told him after it was down for four days with the database error. Now it keeps going down and won't even ping. He says they did "unscheduled upgrade" and now it keeps going down. I think eventually it will go down and never come back.

Re: Site going down?

Well, that sucks. Tom is the owner.

Re: Site going down?

Supposedly a corrupted registry on the server was the problem and it has been rebuilt. Hopefully it stays up.

I'm sure a lot of people missed the site. Hope it is fixed

Oh Tom, you slay me. Don't even know/care when your own site goes down.

Today is the first day in a week at least that I am able to get this site. I was having withdrawal symptoms.

Re: Site going down?

Hard to believe Tom had to be told by someone the site was down. I thought site owners have alerts in place that notify you when a site crashes or goes off line. I suppose that is true only if you choose to.....

Re: Site going down?

Has anyone actually seen Tom? Do we know Tom is real?

John Clark 01-21-2014 11:53 AM

Re: Site going down?

JSanders and I have met him. He's real. He's a nice guy but obviously has many other things he cares more about than this forum. He does still pay to have it hosted. Google checks must be enough to keep it running.

Re: Site going down?

If this site is hosted by a commercial company then there is no reason for it to be down unless modifications are being made causing this. But John Clark indicates it is hosted.
So maybe Tom does the work on his own.

John Clark 02-02-2014 10:52 PM

Re: Site going down?

He says it is with a hosting company. This kind of thing has always been a problem. BlackBerryFAQ is gone because he said the hosting company just took it down without notifying him.

Re: Site going down?

It could have happened, I have had some weird experiences with various hosting companies over the years.

True dat Zombie.....But most site owners take positive action to eliminate the issue. Throwing up one's hands and saying it is their fault is not exactly the most effective method. At least not for the members.

When is the last time we saw BB FAQS? Pretty much says it all to me.....

Re: Site going down?

Sometime last year I think, just after it was hacked.

Re: Site going down?

The FAQ's were/are woefully outdated, but your point is taken.

John Clark 02-03-2014 02:42 PM

Re: Site going down?

There was still some good info there. I would have copied some of it if I'd known ahead of time it was going to be taken down.

Re: Site going down?

Wondering if the slow down with posting questions is about this site failing or the lack of confidence in Blackberry surviving:-(

John Clark 02-08-2014 10:27 AM

Re: Site going down?

Crackberry is busy and the RIM forums are plenty busy. This site is it's own problem. Not even the owner cares about it.

NJBlackBerry 02-08-2014 11:23 AM

Re: Site going down?

While there are clearly problems with BlackBerry sales, that has nothing to do with this failure of a website.

I'd have to say the former.

Case in point - the Z30 has been on the market for months. No dedicated forum for it. That's just one small example.

John Clark 02-12-2014 08:25 AM

Re: Site going down?

That's because the owner doesn't care and neither does anyone else. I'll ask him to add it.

Re: Site going down?

Well, he managed to create a Z & Q section, can't be that difficult. Hope he has the time.

fourstringfuror 02-12-2014 11:42 AM

Re: Site going down?

The point isn't adding a Z30 section; it's not being a deadbeat site admin. The issue of site traffic is sort of a chicken/egg situation: if the site is inactive, users aren't going to come here for support. If people don't come here for support, the site becomes inactive.

This isn't news to anyone, but the best thing Tom can do to increase traffic is to provide a good reason for users to come here in the first place. I'm not a site admin, never have been, but it seems like a logical thing to do.

John Clark 02-12-2014 11:57 AM

Re: Site going down?

The Google checks still come in. Must be enough to keep it running.

The site gets enough hits (just too many spammers) and no repeat business.

Re: Site going down?

Maybe a few more Admins with the ability to add sections would help. It's not difficult but if the "owner" is too busy maybe it would help.

John Clark 06-03-2014 07:21 PM

Re: Site going down?

The server was replaced a while back. It shouldn't be going down anymore.

Had a odd hiccup with mysql. It literally deleted itself. Logs don't show anything malicious. Reverted to a backup and off we went.
