RIM May Split Business Apart
Research In Motion, which last month hired banking firms to help it explore strategic options, might break the company up. Reuters, citing the U.K.'s Sunday Times, says that RIM might fracture the company by splitting its handset business apart from its messaging network.
RIM may make its handset business a separate company, or sell it altogether, according to The Sunday Times. Potential acquirers of said handset business include Amazon and Facebook, and RIM's messaging network could also be sold off and/or opened up to competing platforms to help generate income. Last, RIM might sell a large stake of the existing company to a larger market player, such as Microsoft. Neither The Sunday Times nor Reuters cited sources for their information. Gartner recommended that several years ago.
Unfortunately, it is the same path Palm took into oblivion. |

Re: RIM May Split Business Apart
The RIM collapse did not have to happen. It is the result of arrogance. There are many lessons to be learned here.
In a few months, I'm sure I will be off to Apple. :-( |
Re: RIM May Split Business Apart
I suppose the RIM BBM system will be worth something. This is so distressing.

Re: RIM May Split Business Apart
They need to do a lot more than empower people. They need to change their entire marketing effort to focus on Value. They are a commodity now, just like Android. Apple sells on value. RIM needs to do the same thing.

Re: RIM May Split Business Apart
They need to deliver a product.
No more delays, no more speeches, no more demos. |
Re: RIM May Split Business Apart
Anyone here an "Enterprise" customer? I really liked the email from RIM last week. We need to see more info like that being publicized. It's about time they started fighting back.
If you want a secure device, get a BlackBerry... that's what I tell my users when they ask. If anything else, from a security perspective, you are better off with a Win7Phone than iOS or Android... but you never see that in the news either... |
Re: RIM May Split Business Apart
Unfortunately they are losing the "security" battle; once the Playbook started to use ActiveSync, that ship has sailed.
I concur with using a Windows Phone before the other two. |
