is it worth upgrading my 8130 to OS 4.5?

well, is it? I have a Telus Mobility Pearl 8130 with OS 4.3.0.65 and I was looking to upgrade to version 4.5.0.101/4.5.0.77, but was searching the net and found a few pros and cons about the 4.5. I don't know if all are related to the build I mentioned above, but I was hoping you guys could clear this up for me and maybe mention some other pros/cons about this latest build.

cons/bugs
  • media player doesn't play as many formats
  • WAP has some bugs (moving cursor within a text box)
  • music doesn't play in standby
  • html email requires you to 'allow images' each email (not a huge problem, but rather an annoyance)
  • soft reset doesn't work (although I also read that now it supposedly works in the newer builds of 4.5)
  • remaining space on bb will be low -- I have a lot of 3rd party apps
  • if you select "Get Images" on an email but delete it before it's completed either operation, it'll show an unread message on the main display even though the email is gone.

pros
  • docsToGo
  • Html email
  • update media player (layout?)

concerns from OS 4.3
  • gps on my 8130 only worked for me intermittently ... and it didn't more often than it did. At first, I read elsewhere that a 3rd party app called GPSed sometimes seemed to kickstart it (which led me to believe that it was a software, not hardware issue), but then eventually even that didn't work. Plus the GPSed program also created another bug which wouldn't let me save edited contacts, so I had to remove it. Is the GPS in 8130's working better now in 4.5??

Could you guys please point out some other pros & cons about the 4.5 OS?

Wirelessly posted (Verizon 8830)

In more layman's terms, I did it for my wife's 8130 just because it is a newer OS and it may enable her to access certain programs that may NOT be attainable with 4.3.

dstaff 10-24-2008 01:53 PM

I upgraded my Telus 8130 to 4.5.0.77 and have had no issues. (other than I can't find Circle popper for 4.5) My main reason was to be able to separate out my Calendars. 4.5 support a calendar for each e-mail account setup. They all display on the same page, but they are listed by different colour. The other thing I wanted was Docs-to-go.

I have not regretted it one bit.
Cheers, Hope this helps you decide.

how about any of the cons/bugs I listed above. Media player formats, WAP bug, music in standby? How does your GPS work? Did it work fine in 4.3 for you?

Also this question is for anyone... can I install version 4.6 of the Desktop Manager if I upgrade my OS to 4.5, or do I have to stick with DM 4.5? Any major differences between Desktop Manager 4.5 and 4.6?

dstaff 10-24-2008 03:07 PM

I have not run into any of the con's...
All my Music is in mp3 format so never ran in to that.
I've only ever fiddled with the GPS, but never had an issue, (unless I'm inside... but then I've been told that being inside affect GPS at the best of times)

Teksu 10-24-2008 03:41 PM

Mark under the pro's section: Increased battery life.

My Battery life has increased about 20-30%

Oh and my free file is bigger on average than it was before i installed 4.5

atomicrabbit 10-24-2008 04:37 PM

@teksu: did you use some sort of memory enhancing app to increase the free space? Because I've heard the opposite about 4.5, that it uses more space because of the new features.

jocularity 10-24-2008 06:07 PM

After I upgraded, I noticed an improvement in speed. I went from 4.3 to 4.5.0.66.

Hi faith4, absolutely. As my signature says, I am using OS 4.5.0.77 on my 8130 on Telus. It works like a charm.

i upgraded ot 4.5 a few days ago, no problems to speak of as of yet. im happy with it. I noticed that docs to go wasn't included in the version i downloaded (bell mobility's 4.5 release). If i downloaded another carriers version would there be more included?

dstaff 10-26-2008 02:38 PM

I'm surprised Docs to go was not included..
If you launch the DM and select Application Loader, then "add/remove" is it included in the list but just un checked? If so, if you select it, it should install.

g-off 10-26-2008 06:10 PM

Ok thanks, ill give that a shot and see what happens.

ok i just found some time to upgrade my bb... i was able to do it successfully! here are a few notes/tips:

- You'll have to re-register and re-send the service books to your phone after the upgrade or else you won't be able to use the HTML email features... which brings me to my next point...

- HTML EMAIL ROCKS! (although I think it's going to kill my free memory lol) There is an option to "Download Images Automatically", but even when I have it set to enabled, I still have to select "Get Images" from the menu in each email. Not a big deal though. html email still rocks!!!

- SoftReset works fine.

- Opera mini works fine. There are no permission requests every time you start it -- with or without the firewall enabled.

- moving the cursor around within textboxes in the Browser works flawlessly. In fact, I find it works even better than it did in OS 4.3..btw, I love the search box on the start page in the browser! Smart idea!

- i have a LOT more free space after the upgrade than i did before the upgrade... weird! I don't have DocsToGo installed yet....but even with it, it only takes about 1mb more.

- the new media player 'seems' ...... correction... IS much more functional !!! The fullscreen mode also works better (it didn't always work for me in 4.3)

- YOUTUBE FINALLY WORKS ON MY PEARL!!!!

Weird things:

- something weird appeared in my Advanced Options after the upgrade. An item called "Wireless Update" appeared, but after deleting and re-sending my service books and a couple reboots, the item disappeared. Anyone know anything about that? EDIT: I did a bit of searching and found that "Wireless Upgrade is not yet activated on RIM's infrastructure. It doesn't do anything yet.", so I guess it's nothing to worry about.

- before I updated, I backed everything up using the 4.3 DM... yknow, just in case. Then I was going to back everything up after the upgrade using the 4.5 DM (which I upgraded to, along with the 4.5 OS)... but when backing up, I got the error, "Error backing up databases". It seemed to stop at the end of RMS databases. So I cannot make a backup. Any ideas? EDIT: I did an advanced backup and backed up each item individually and I was able to back up the RMS databases, and everything else EXCEPT KeepassBBDatabaseObject, which is part of KeepassBB. So I started up KeepassBB (since I hadn't ran it since the upgrade) and then refreshed the backup utility and was able to backup KeepassBBDatabaseObject. Then I performed a regular backup and everything worked fine.

- After installing the latest KeepassBB app, I got a weird error message that said JVM Error 547 in tiny writing on a white screen, with a Reset button just below. I clicked reset and it rebooted my pearl. After it finished booting everything was ok.... so that was weird.

- After installing Desktop Manager 4.5, I can't seem to back up third party apps by going to Device Switch Wizard. When I click the Start button, it seems to start backing up, then hang in the middle of the process. Any ideas? I tried it on 2 separate computers.
Note: This happened before and after upgrading to OS 4.5. I had upgraded the Desktop Manager first, then went to back everything up from my 8130 with OS 4.3 still. It would always hang on the third party backup. After uninstall Desktop Manager 4.5 and re-installing DM 4.3, I was able to backup no problem. Like I said this happened on 2 separate computers, so I don't think it's specific to the computer, but rather a bug in the DM 4.5 software. Same thing happened after I upgraded the OS to 4.5. Any ideas?

I use my BB8130 as (in order of personal importance) a Scheduler/Appointment reminder, a radio, a GPS and an email client. I rarely use my phone as a phone. I'm on Bell Mobility. I did not want to upgrade to 4.5 as whenever I did Moodio will not work. However, one day my Calendar stopped displaying entries: it kept hanging on the initial screen. So I had to bite the bullet and upgrade to 4.5.0.89. Now my Calendar is fine, but amaZeGPS no longer has sound. I followed amAzeGPS' forum and uninstalled the amAzeGPS BB 8130 version and installed the 8100 version, but I still do not get any sound. I have since uninstalled amAzeGPS. Nav4All still gives me directions on the screen, but since the I haven't had the need to use it as a navigational aid so I do not know if the upgraded muted it. Moodio now works, but sometimes the media player stops and I have to hit the Play button.

The amAzeGPS forum states that a new version is targetted for November 2008. When that one comes out I will give it a try. As far as I can tell Nav4All is still at 8.0.74.

So you're saying that the update removes compatibility with some audio formats on the media player? Could you please expand on this?

I have an 8130 on Verizon Wireless, and the single most important feature to me is the ability to stream .3gp audio using Orb Mycast. If the pending Verizon update to 4.5 removes or limits this functionality in any way, I'm going to stick with 4.3.x.

Redflea 11-01-2008 10:37 PM

I've not seen this - I'd be interested to hear what he believes has been removed? I would be surprised to hear RIM is removing format compatibility...
