Loss of contacts

I've heard from a fw people that they have lost all their contacts.
In order to avoid this, how can I protect my contacts; is there a way of backing these up or transferring them?
I have a BlackBery 9000 (c. 2008).

Sync to Google.

You can do regular backups through Desktop Manager. Or like dc/dc said you can sync to Google and have all your contacts stored in the Google cloud.

DM is easy and free. Also it keeps your info on your computer and not in some unknown location.
