8830 Radio via Bluetooth Connection to Desktop Internet

I have a couple 8830WE laying around and thought it would be nice to use them as portable internet radios. The phones have no service provider. Would it be possible to re-purpose them by loading an app (ex: Pandora) or browser and then connect to the internet via a bluetooth connection to my desktop?

Thanks for any comments/suggestions.

I'm not sure about doing what you suggest via laptop. But I don't see why you couldn't connect to Bluetooth speaker, An Amazon Alexa or similar; that is, a device specifically capable of streaming audio from another device.

You may run into problems wrt to internet content, however. There may be issues with connecting to the internet via wifi without an active mobile wireless account with a data plan associated with the device. This was the case with many carriers at the time, and I recall it tended to be the rule rather than the exception. All you can do is try; and maybe you have tried, and if you are able to connect the internet then that potential problem is moot.

The other problem as far as content is lack of it. If you have already identified content and the streaming to a speaker is your only issue, then nevermind. But if you can't stream it in a browser or find an app for it, then I think you will be limited to media files you download. On that score there is luck: many podcasts out there to choose from.

Also Confused. I have a few older BB's and they will connect to the internet via a browser on WIFI but why? As aiharkness said it is easier to simply use a the laptop or a device designed to stream like Alexa.
If you did connect to the laptop via BT to the BB then stream then your only using it as a speaker.
You cannot use it remote from a WIFI connection.

Afterthought prompted by @tsac ... If you have an Alexa device, or Google's product, or whatever, just stream directly. We use Pandora on an Echo and on a Show and it's practically perfect. And as for laptop, same, just stream directly, why the need for the separate device?

About the wifi issue, some interesting history. The forums here are full of questions in the past from users at the time about their problem accessing data using wifi when they didn't have a data plan on their account. It depended on the carrier and possibly the device branding. T-Mobile was one of the exceptions, until it wasn't.

I don't remember the details now. There could be an old post of mine talking about it, or you can search the T-Mobile forums if really curious. Anyway, for a long time T-Mobile devices were capable of accessing the internet on wifi with no data plan and without even having a SIM in the device. At some point TMO released an OS upgrade, either for the 9700 or the 9900, and with that upgrade the user could only access wifi if there was a SIM with a data plan in the device.

I know because it came up on the TMO forums and I tested. It was not an issue for me, but I tested to help out. After reading about it on the forms for a long time from others on other carriers, I was able to see it for myself. Upgrade to the OS version, problem; reload the earlier OS, no problem. It even surprised the TMO mods on the forum at the time.

OK, I'll just toss the BB 8830's into the electronic junk box and get a used iphone. The iphone with no carrier will be perfect for what I want.

Thanks.

Ok but still confused on exactly what your trying to do. A cell phone is a cell phone and one without a carrier service is the same as the next regardless of the model or manufacturer.

I'll get an android phone and load Pandora/radio apps to use around the house.

my Bold 9000 works well with Pandora with wifi only and no SIM

I can stream for 10 hours on wifi and to BT speaker with the extra capacity battery

Re: 8830 Radio via Bluetooth Connection to Desktop Internet

@NYIslander Did you try? My posts above were about the things you might run into (and some I think you will run into). As @knottyrope indicates, it can work (stream Pandora to Bluetooth speaker, for instance). It may not for you, but I'd be curious what you find if you try.

I know I had the Pandora app on my BBOS device at the time. I had no idea if Pandora still allows it to connect, or if you can get it from BlackBerry World now if you don't already have it. But sounds like it will work if you have it or can get it (and the device can connect to the internet).

Again, I'd be curious what you find in your situation.

I tried a 9700 and a 9810 and both work on wifi without a carrier or sim chip for internet connection to get music
