What is classified as data?

Can anybody help me please.
What exactly is classified as data. Is it just internet usage that uses data? I am with Rogers, and online you can check your data usage. I'm wondering where my data usage is coming from, as I've only been on the internet once for a few minutes. I try to use as little as possible.
This is why I'm wondering, is there anything other than internet that uses up data?
Thanks!

Could be an app...most instant messaging apps use data...

juwaack68 01-12-2010 03:09 PM

Email
BlackBerrry Messenger
Internet (via any browser)
Usage of any 3rd party application that is updating via a web-interface (i.e., Google Maps lookup)

You can turn off data connection and still be able to use voice and texting. under manage connections, mobile network options, you can turn data services off.

Thanks.
Does sending pictures/video that's been taken from my phone count as "data" usage? Also, I thought blackberry messenger was free and didn't use data. I use blackberry messenger all the time, everyday, but it wouldn't affect data usage that much would it? Do pictures sent through bbm use data? Sorry, I'm so not technical. I appreciate your help!

Blackberry messenger does use data, on average we say each message uses about 1kb, but that's just an average.

Edit: And yes, a picture message sent through BBM would use data.

Which plan are you on? How much have you used so far? When is your bill cycle date?

Data is anything on your phone except voice and text messaging.

+1 to the above.
And "nothing" is free.

Raptor464 01-12-2010 04:37 PM

NJBlackBerry 01-12-2010 04:40 PM

Raptor464 01-12-2010 04:44 PM

The BB itself will use data as needed. It's not just data usage that you initiate that counts.

Thanks.

Another question;
Is Pin messaging the same as BBM?
On Fido (Canadian cellular);
"Unlimited real-time chat with Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Google Talk and BlackBerry Messenger"

Does that mean I can PIN message unlimitedly as well?

Noodle22 01-14-2010 12:01 AM

Yup.

ChrisFBBS 01-14-2010 03:30 PM

Yes it does.
BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) is data. It is NOT text messaging as some might think.
As noted above... anything that is NOT phone or SMS/MMS is data.
