Buy torch outright, unlocked?
 

If I pay the full $500 for the torch, will I get the unlock code for it? How would I talk to?

Don't think AT&T will sel an unlocked device. If you are an AT&T customer in good standing, they may give it to you, if you ask. Otherwise you will need to buy one from someone like horizon wireless online (BBForums : HorizonWirelessOnline.com - Horizon Wireless, The World’s Cellular Repair Center ß) one of our sponsors.

Thanks, I have been a customer for years from AT&T and will be staying with them. So I really did not need to unlock any how.

If you have been a customer, ask and see if they will give it to you. They probably will.

Many people (for some odd reason) seem to think that if they purchase the device at full retail price that somehow that equates to entitling them to the device being unlocked.

Not sure where that logic comes from, though, since the two things don't have anything to do with each other.

Perhaps this isn't the case with the OP, but I have seen this before.

Thanks again.. Just was not sure how that worked. Like I said I am not leaving AT&T so there is no real reason for me to get an unlock code unless I really dont like it and decide to sell.

Why pay full price? If you'r already a cusomer go for the discount. You can still get it unlocked and when the contract is up move carriers if you wish.

I am a current customer. But only 2 months into my current contract since I bought iPhone 4 so I ether cancel contract for $325 and pay $199 for the Torch or but the Torch outright and pay $500 to continue on the current contract. This way it is $25 cheaper and my contract will be done 2 months quicker. I sold the iPhone on eBay for $700.

If you sold the iPhone for $700 you have no need to worry about contracts. You could make a living just selling. I dont know what you do but try sales.

So? You already said repeatedly that you have no intentions of leaving. So what difference does it make?

And the darn codes are VERY inexpensive. So even if you have pay for it, what's the big deal?


I wouldn't be surprised if AT&T isn't giving the unlock codes to anyone until after the exclusivity period is over. Just a guess, though.

Whoops. I'm sorry. I completely apologize. I had just come from one of your other threads and thought this one was one you had started as well. I'm sorry.

I can see some logic to it. If you buy the phone at a discount, with a new contract or contract extension, you are getting a lower price in exchange for your willingness to enter into a contract to buy phone service from the provider. If you pay full retail, you're buying the phone outright, without entering into any further contract with the provider who's selling it. So you might reasonably believe that you should be able to do whatever you want with it, including operating it on another provider's network.

Of course, the flaw in that logic is that you're buying the device as is, which happens to be locked, and you know that before you buy. No provider is required to be in the business of selling unlocked phones--not in the US, at least. In Singapore and Israel (I think), it's illegal for providers to sell locked phones. In many other countries, it's not illegal, but providers are required to provide free unlock codes. So the expectation that a phone bought without a contract should be unlocked or freely unlockable has some international precedent.
