Trouble Downloading Firmware
I need some help, guys. I have spent the past few days trying to download the latest leaked version (.205), but I cannot find the icon to where I downloaded the .exe file to. At first I thought I merely lost track to where I downloaded it to, so I downloaded it again. The second time I was absolutely sure where I downloaded to, but after downloading the file is again missing. I tried it this morning and for the third time the file is missing.
This is probably more of a Windows issue instead of a Blackberry OS issue. I am running on old Windows XP and had no issues downloading the most recent leaked version (.190). I download each version to Computer > Program Files > Research In Motion > Blackberry > 9900. Presently I have the past two .exe files from previous versions (.190 most recent), and I merely tried to download the most recent .205 leaked version to that folder and for thee times the file downloads fully, but there is no .205 program for me to execute and start the updating process. It downloads but disappears. Any of you guys have this problem, and does anyone here have a fix to this downloading problem? Posted via BlackBerryForums.com Mobile |
Re: Trouble Downloading Firmware
What browser do you use? FireFox, by default, puts downloaded items into My Documents > Downloads.

Re: Trouble Downloading Firmware
Have you done a search of your C: drive on your PC for the file?
|
Re: Trouble Downloading Firmware
The entire C: drive? It will take forever, but I will give it a try.
|
Re: Trouble Downloading Firmware
Shouldn't take too long...
Click Start > Search > Files or Folders Select All Files or Folders Put 7.1.0.205 And select your C drive. Let it scan to find your file. |
Re: Trouble Downloading Firmware
I just copied and pasted the exact downloading name into the search option and it checked the entire C: drive and found nothing. Huh? Maybe I will try downloading it with Firefox instead of Internet Explorer. I do not know why the sucker disappears every time I download it.

Re: Trouble Downloading Firmware
I tried the Firefox approach and I find in the Downloads folder that the file downloaded in the most recent link is a torrent file. Perhaps this is the reason why I cannot download it with Internet Explorer?
|
Re: Trouble Downloading Firmware
You would need a Torrent client like uTorrent or Bittorrent.
You can also use the dropbox link in the thread. That is the actual file, not a torrent file, which again, can only be opened with a client. |
Re: Trouble Downloading Firmware
Do you have any type of antivirus like norton or mcafee? I've read that sometimes those antivirus programs would block downloading OS's.

Re: Trouble Downloading Firmware
No, he just kept downloading a torrent link. Didn't have a client. He went to the wrong link.

All I know is that the file is downloaded to a temporary file and upon completion is copied to its determined location. However, I cannot locate the damn bugger even after specifying its destination folder. Ugh! |
Re: Trouble Downloading Firmware
You are saying you that you downloaded http://dl.dropbox.com/u/30033427/990...A7.1.0.205.exe <----That file three times and can't find it? Uhmmm how did you download a 245+ MB file in 3 seconds?

Re: Trouble Downloading Firmware
It is nonsense. Most, if not all Anti-Virus software will advise you that the file you are attempting to download may be harmful. Do you want to do it anyways.
After the file has been downloaded and you open it, you will get another warning. This file...blah blah blah....usually get the option to open in some type of sandbox environment or cancel the pending action(s) Files get tagged by various AV software all the time. Also, I notice from your post that you got a big honking notification about that file. There is no way you can download a 245MB file and have it just disappear into the ether. |

Re: Trouble Downloading Firmware
OK, guys, I have downloaded and installed BitTorrent. However, I do not know how to use it since I have never downloaded a torrent file before. Seems a bit complicated to me, and I wonder why download through torrent client and not through the usual way.
|
Re: Trouble Downloading Firmware
You're doing something wrong. I just clicked the link in post 19 and it downloaded fine without any issue.
|
Re: Trouble Downloading Firmware
Bittorent is pretty easy to use after you install it just find a torrent file that has what you're looking for and voila! It downloads like normal and then install.

Oh my. Using a Torrent when the EXE is right there is post #19. Downloading now.
Torrents are a wonderful place to test your Anti Virus program. |

Something is wrong. Can you try on another PC? I downloaded from post 19 with no issue. File showed up in my downloads folder.

Re: Trouble Downloading Firmware
Aha, I just noticed the reason why: Norton removed it. I did not notice it earlier because the pop-up window on the lower right was not there when I saw it. I think that I may have just came back too late before the window disappeared.
OK, so now the next step: how do I enable Norton to accept this download? |
Re: Trouble Downloading Firmware
Disable Norton > Download File > Enable Norton
|
Re: Trouble Downloading Firmware
You mean have Windows not start it? How do I do that? I suppose I click Start > Control Panel, and the rest I'm not sure.
|
Re: Trouble Downloading Firmware
I don't use Norton, but you should be able to right-click on the Norton icon in your system tray and select Disable.

Re: Trouble Downloading Firmware
From Symantec - Who will be your next stop if you cannot figure out how your AV program works.
In rare cases where a legitimate file has been misidentified and subsequently quarantined, your computer may behave abnormally or you may find that one or more applications no longer function as expected. In such rare situations, you should open the Quarantine in your Symantec antivirus product. From here, you may review the list of all files detected as Suspicious, and, if you identify a potential misidentification, restore the file from quarantine and allow it to run normally. -Double-click on the SAV shield icon in your Notification Area (lower right-hand corner of screen). -From the View menu choose Quarantine . -Select the file you want to delete. -To select all files, click on the first file. Scroll to the end of the Quarantined files list. Hold down the SHIFT key and click on the last file. -Click the Delete button in the toolbar (looks like a red x). -In the take action dialog box, click Start Delete . -When status has changed to succeeded click Close button. -If more documents appear in the list, repeat steps 3 - 6 until finished. -When done, click Close . Click Exit to exit SAV. |

I am not sure what's going wrong, or where, but let's try disabling Norton and downloading via FireFox. It should go directly to the downloads folder as stated previously. |
Re: Trouble Downloading Firmware
If there's this much trouble just getting the file downloaded... I can't wait to see the thread for the actual handheld update.
