3G on Bb Storm in NYC
 

My wife bought me the Verizon BB Storm and I am using it on Verizon's network and I live in Manhattan. Right now the device is showing "1XEV" in the top right screen of the home screen. I know there is a mobile network setting under options.

What settings do I change to get on Verizon's 3G network? They should have coverage in NYC? 1XEV is not 3G right?

1XEV is Verizon's 3g data protocol.

That is Verizon's version of 3G. Your fine.

I also live in Manhattan and I have the same issue. Can anyone confirm that 1XEV is Verizon's protocol for 3G? On page 39 of the Tips, hints and shortcuts guide it shows all the wireless network coverage indicators and it clearly shows that there is a 3G indicator. I don't know why Verizon would use the 1XEV indicator for the 3G, since this will cause most people to call technical support.

It was confirmed twice above. The 3G is only with a SIM card and not on Verizon's network.

1XEV is 3G on a CDMA network. (EV is short for EVDO)

The 3G indicator is for GSM based networks.

1X or 1xRTT = Verizon's slower Data network. Verizon calls their 1xRTT network Express Network or National Accesss, and claim speeds are up to 144kbps (burstable), average is 60-80Kbps.

EVDO = Verizon's faster data network. It has two speeds.. Rev 0 and Rev A. Verizon calls their EVDO network their BroadBand Access network.

Verizon phones will show either 1XEV or just EV when you have an EVDO connection.

According to Verizon's older FAQ page, they claimed thier Rev 0 network provides typical download speeds in the area of 400-700kbps and upload speeds of 60 xxx8211; 80 Kbps. Their FAQ used to say downloads were burstable up to 2Mbits/s.

For Rev A Verizon claims typical download speeds in the area of 600 Kbps xxx8211; 1.4 Mbps, and typical upload speeds of 500 xxx8211; 800 Kbps.. While technically burstable up to 3Mbits/s, Verizon's FAQ no longer lists burstable speeds for EVDO.

The Storm is a Rev A capable device.

Unfortunately, their Rev A devices don't tell you if you are on a Rev 0 or Rev A tower. They just report back EVDO.

My phone shows 1XEV. I just tethered from the ATL airport and got 2285 kbs download and 573 kbs upload on speedtest.net. That blew away my expectations!
