Thanks for your appreciation. If enough people appreciate a list like this we could make it a sticky and keep updating it?

Nice list. You may want to give that list to BBerryOne . He have almost all the mobile websites there.

Thanks. I had a hunch a good list existed somewhere. I will forward my links to bberryone straight away and update my post with bberryone's site.

I'd still like to see a sticky so our membership can all colaborate on a giant listing. Kind of like wikipedia, when people from all over work together to build a respectible repository of knowledge. For what its worth, I just want to have the best browsing experience possible on my berry and have access to it from my favorite forum. What matters is that our membership benefits with an improved BB browsing experience.

Nice! I have BerryOne and would be great to get those added to it. Thanks for taking to time to put a list together.

onlindis 11-13-2006 07:06 PM

Robbym, this list is great, thank you for the hardwork. I've had a quick look at the one's that didn't stand out to me and have added them to BBerryOne. We are constantly hunting all the search engines for new sites, so if you see something we don't have, we would love to hear from you.

robbym 11-13-2006 10:21 PM

Thanks

Thanks for noticing. I just did a major update with 100+ new links. Stay tuned for more to come.

You guys have obviously put a lot of time and hard work into these lists; thanks heaps, your efforts are really appreciated by making things simpler for the rest of us.

Thank you, that was the whole point. I'm glad you liked it. For those who don't already know, you can apply a star rating to posts you enjoy or appreciate (to apply a rating click the five stars in the blue bar just above the original posting).

Off the top of my head there are just shy of 200 links there as of this writing and I have been recieving pm requesting new links. I'd love to see and have access to 500+ links here on my favorite forum. So please keep sending links in and keep checking back for updates. I'll do an update every so often with the links I receive.

robbym 11-14-2006 05:34 PM

Thank You! For all of your diligent efforts to provide us with this fantastic resource.....

robbym 11-16-2006 01:55 AM

Good News! I have 200+ more sites to add!!!

Well its been many many hours of searching, testing and consolidating optimized sites from several good sources online along with links in your private messages. I now have 300+ links for websites optimized to small screen devices and am closing in on my target of 500.

If you like this resource please give this post a good rating and let blackberryforums know you support this effort.

Sure, whatever works.

Onlandis, when might our members who prefer portals see another update with these links on bberryone? (y)

onlindis 11-17-2006 08:30 PM

Your hard work is appreciated, as I said earlier your saving us money. Some of the links I recognize from before perhaps you found a BlackBerry version. When we went through, we could only find pocket pc versions for some of these sites, which as you've likely encountered don't always work on the BlackBerry. We'll go through the list, test the various suggestions to ensure they are operational on the BlackBerry and then add to BBerryOne accordingly.

Soapm 11-18-2006 01:08 AM

I vote for a sticky...

robbym 11-19-2006 05:37 PM

Thanks..

Thanks for your vote!

Moderators, I have posted a link to this post in several other forums in hopes of bringing in new members.

MartiniGal 11-19-2006 06:45 PM

I love BBerryOne...I just found the site and can't say enough about it. It saves time not having to access the web browser first. Any way to add personal bookmarks? Thanks!

onlindis 11-20-2006 12:53 AM

I don't want to get off topic because this is Robbym list. We appreciate your kind words, we love to hear from people, its one of the reasons we put alot into BBerryOne. We want BBerryOne to enhance people's mobile experience. We're in talks with some strategic partnerships right now. We have a number of plans for the continuous development of BBerryOne over the next year. We'll keep alot of the updates going in the BBerryOne thread and if people have suggestions on things they would like to see, we would love to hear from you. 8-) 8-)

robbym 11-20-2006 07:07 PM

I'll encourage your growth too.

First, it's not my list it's the memberships list. BBerryone like the many other mobile portals serves an important role in the growth and development of the mobile browsing experience so please take what you can from this post. When efforts are shared everyone benefits, that's the whole beauty of public forums! That's how I want this post used, as an open forum for all members to discuss everything related to mobile browsing.

koleary19067 11-20-2006 10:11 PM

Fantastic work !!

G M Fude 11-21-2006 03:31 PM

Definitely worthy of a sticky, given the hard work Rob is putting into maintaining and updating the list. I wonder if it might make it easier to see the recent additions if they were flagged as new in some way for a week or so? (sorry Rob, may be even more work for you!)

robbym 11-21-2006 11:40 PM

Agreed! A Good Idea but How?

G M Fude,

I think that's a great suggestion. I've been toying with the idea since the first update but am not yet sure how to go about doing it? I am still learning about the limitations of a forum post versus a webpage. If anyone reading has some tips about forum markup please let me know.

Note: I'd like to put file size indicators on each link too but this can't be done manually because size changes too rapidly from link to link. It would have to be some kind of automated script.

koleary19067 11-21-2006 11:42 PM

I suggest you post the date that they were added.

robbym 11-21-2006 11:50 PM

Sometimes the best answers are obvious, simple and go right over my head.

Doh! Thanks.

Look for some kind of new entry tag on the next big update.

bgkahuna 11-22-2006 08:53 AM

Cool Thanks!!!

MartiniGal 11-22-2006 12:45 PM

Site to add

Wanted to recommend JetBlue's flight status site but I am barred from posting a URL until I have 10 posts...kinda like the 3 martini lunch limit! Anyway, it is a great mobile site that updates to keep you on top of your flight. Enjoy.

brucejr 11-22-2006 01:52 PM

WOW what a list!! Stinsonddog's the man...or is it K-9??

Stinsonddog's Blackberry Tips

G M Fude 11-22-2006 09:05 PM

Rob, after having a look at your sample in the OP, I think maybe the date makes more sense, exactly as O'Leary suggested. The light bulb is a good attention-getter but makes more work for you, having to delete it after a week or two; the date can remain as-is. And please keep the international date format!

snowskier79 11-22-2006 09:11 PM

Mods - Has this thread been considered a sticky? This list is awesome, thanks robbym!

MartiniGal 11-22-2006 09:37 PM

Indicating new mobiles sites

I actually prefer the visual (i.e. light bulb) so I can quickly scan down through the list to see what's new. Maybe it would be easier for you to just indicate the new sites in a different color font. Just my 2 cents.

onlindis 11-22-2006 11:47 PM

I like the lightbulb, it makes scanning the list for new items alot easier.

robbym 11-24-2006 02:22 AM

Yes and Thanks

Yes, this is a sticky and thanks for your support. (y)

robbym 11-24-2006 02:28 AM

So far the lightbulb is winning...

...and believe it or not it's actually easier to use. I found a machine that will do some tasks in batch for me on these lists and the bulb  fortunately is one of those things. I like the date because we get a sense of history but we also get clutter and it's not as eye pleasing to look at either.

Which ever method has more votes when the next update is ready wins.

Score:
lightbulb 2 date 1

MartiniGal 11-24-2006 07:49 AM

Lightbulb

If you haven't counted me already for the lightbulb (sans date), then please do!

robbym 11-25-2006 01:11 PM

Update!!! 70 new sites to be added shortly.

Hello everyone, I have good news I have more new links to post. Keep an eye out over the next day or so. Please enjoy the list and continue to send any links you want that are missing.

To those of you who sent me links thank you!

Rather than inform you of updates with yet another reply, does anyone know how to change the header on a sticky so that it shows up on the front page too?

Moderators: I am going to write to W3C regarding this list and request their support as part of their own Mobile Web Initiative (MWI). I figure the more Blackberry users that know about the list and this forum the better. I will do what I can to increase our communities exposure.

Thanks for sharing guys. I'll put these in the next update. onlindis, it's nice to collaborate with you. How are things going over at bberryone?

onlindis 12-05-2006 08:31 PM

We keep digging, the Las Vegas hotels were our most recent find. Acutally, Im not sure if you have my favorite site on your list:

Ski Report - InfoSpace

it provides ski reports around the world. Our Berry411 pluggin seems to be popular so we keep pushing forward.

Not a problem....it is a little hobby per se. I will keep looking. I probably have 200-300 more links to upload. I just want to cross-reference so no creating duplicates.

Any particular categories you are weak on?

When we started doing our research for BBerryOne we happened to come across a few sites that we weren't sure whether to include or not and in the end or at the least for the time being have chosen not to include.

This is the BlackBerry version of a fairly well known reference book however its content is aimed at individuals over the age of 18: www.kamawap.com

I've come across alot of questionable content in my searches too, but for the sake of good taste (and conscience) have decided to maintain the list at a PG rating for all ages and life-stations. Since the list belongs to the members, I'm going to leave it to a vote whether to include this link on the list.

Members: Are you comfortable with this link?

For those who don't already know about this historic literature, below is a blurb from Wikipedia. Be forwarned, though this is a somewhat bland academic description, the actual text gets very explicit.

Kamasutram, generally known to the Western world as Kama Sutra, is an ancient Indian text on human sexual behavior, widely considered to be the standard work on love in Sanskrit literature. The text was composed by Vatsyayana, as a brief summary of various earlier works belonging to a tradition known generically as Kama Shastra. Kama is literally desire and Sutra signifies a discourse threaded on a series of aphorisms. The text is originally known as Vatsyayana Kamasutram ("Vatsyayana's Aphorisms on Love"). Tradition holds that the author was a celibate scholar. He is believed to have lived sometime between the 1st to 6th centuries C.E., probably during the great cultural flowering of the Gupta period.

Hi everyone,

I'm running a mobile website that you may find worth checking out:
tx2ph.com.
It's a free ebook reading service for PDAs and Internet (WAP)-enabled cell phones. A number of preloaded ebooks is available, or you can add texts yourself, or request a (public-domain) text from Project Gutenberg to be added.
To see how it works without registering, visit: demo.tx2ph.com

Any input is much appreciated.

I built a site that reformats and allows you to easily toggle images on or off to speed up browsing. It's nothing fancy but lets me get to sites that otherwise will not load on my 8700c.
It's 1pga.com

Originally I was just using it and had given the address to some friends. After a "crowdsourcing" discussion I deceided to open it up as an experiment. If you use it let me know how you like it.

Hola all,

Does anyone else like using del.icio.us? I was thinking we could propose a pseudo-standard of tagging a BB wap link (like all the ones in this thread), and everyone could a) contribute using their own account, and b) subscribe (sic) to the group pool.

For example, let's use bbwap as the tag (which includes the ability to use RSS with it and not just basic web browsing):

My personal subscription:

rivviepop's bookmarks tagged with "bbwap" on del.icio.us

Subscribing to the wisdom of the group:

Pages tagged with "bbwap" on del.icio.us

Of course I just chose 'bbwap' randomly, it could be anything so decided upon. I like this because anyone - like the people on this thread - can add a link to their delicious and the rest of us have it on our BB's right away. I certainly would love to have all the links in this thread right now! :)

Thoughts?

onlindis 02-03-2007 07:00 PM

Two new one's I would like to throw out. The first is Press Display which takes multiple newspapers from around the world and offers up on your BlackBerry (PressDisplay.com - Newspaper Replicas From Around the World) the second one, is one of our own and would be for BlackBerry users (http://www.blackberryedge.com). Both are reflected in the lastest update of BBerryOne.

Yeah I know... That's one of the reasons I've been slowing down. I usually copy to a text editor like bbedit (or dreamweaver) to work on it and then paste it back into the post. As for planning and organization it's mostly committed to memory with a few post-its here and there. I've mined hundreds more sites but it's time consuming to test, organize and format the urls for use on this site. Thanks for the compliment though. If anyone has an idea about how to more efficiently or easily manage long lists for posting on forums like this I'm all ears.

Well, as I mentioned above usng Del.icio.us is great. If you create a new user specifically for these bookmarks and simply add them all using your categories, other people can 'subscribe' to your user account and see all the changes you make. Then, if they want to snag a bookmark to add to their own stack it's a one-click task!

You:
- add link in category / categories as you see fit (basically exactly what you do already, but in a webform specifically tailored for this - you can even add notes)

Me:
- 'copy' link to my account, add my tags (mobile, mtag, and mobleo)

I then use the two mobilizing services Mobleo.net and Mobilici.us that are already hooked into my Del.icio.us account and have immediate mobile access to your links. It's a win-win situation for everyone; you have easy control and editing of all your links that requires minimal effort, we gain immediate mobile use (no sending links to our phones, cut-n-pastes to our own Memopad, whatever) of your work.

http://del.icio.us/
http://www.mobleo.net/
http://mobilicio.us/www/

I mean no offense here, but keeping a list of links on a forum post is pretty darn inefficient for both you and me; you have to do all this work (and you can't multiple-categorize easily), and I can't easily visit the links from my phone efficiently and/or have easy search/filter capabilities.

I want to enjoy the fruits of your labor (thanks! :) but without the pain as it currently exists. If desired, you could then post a note (weekly?) just to keep the thread bumped up, "I added 15 new sites this week!" or whatnot.

My $0.02 USD.

rivviepop 03-31-2007 12:21 PM

I should have given an example above -- here's my 'mobleo' tag that has the URLs I want to show up when I visit the http://mobile.mobleo.net/ website on my phone, which I mainly get from this thread of yours:

http://del.icio.us/rivviepop/mobleo

You can see how I then get to add my own unique categories which would maybe be in addition to yours, or replace them because I have a different personal organization system (not that I do, my account looks like a shotgun blast of randomness, heh).

robbym 04-02-2007 02:22 AM

I looked at this early on... ok second take

rivviepop,

I looked at this option early on but it didn't seem to fit my needs. From what I can tell del.icio.us gives users the option to either upload single urls or import/export bookmarks files but no option to upload batches of urls.

My concern is that with 600+ links I have to be able to batch manage. I revisited this again tonight and found that the only way I could utilize del.icio.us would be to open, categorize, name and save each individual url as bookmarks which is actually more work than what I currently do.

The way I am currently mining urls, I copy/produce large html lists taken from a wide number of other html source files which I manually filter and categorize in large chunks, I then use my text editors find/replace function to change html tags into forum posting tags in one shot. If I am mistaken and del.icio.us does permit batch uploads of url lists please send me instructions.

A little bit of script-fu can make it all work -- the Del.icio.us import is looking for a simple HTML file, which you could easily construct to be created from your list of URLs, depending on the format it's in. Let's assume you have a text file with two columns:

TITLE <tab char> URL

Using a bit of 'awk' scripting (which will work on Linux and Mac without any problems, and you can download awk.exe and cat.exe for Windows easily) you can parse this file into an HTML doc that's easy to upload. (you could also use perl)

Code:

# set our file separator to TAB, print out the header
BEGIN {
  FS = "[t]";
  print "<!DOCTYPE NETSCAPE-Bookmark-file-1>";
  print "<TITLE>Bookmarks</TITLE>"
  print "<H1>Bookmarks</H1>"
  print "<DL><p>"
  print "<DT><H3>Del.icio.us</H3>"
  print "<DL><p>"
}

# main loop, $1 = title $2 = url
{
  print "<DT><A HREF=\"$2\">$1</A>"
}

# file footer
END {
  print "</DL><p>"
  print "</DL><p>"
}

Save that as like 'delbook.awk', and you use it like so:

Code:

cat bb_urls.txt | awk -f delbook.awk > delimport.html
Replace cat with cat.exe and awk with awk.exe if you download those and do it on Windows. The above is a template I wrote off the top of my head, so no testing -- it could easily be enhanced to handle a more complex text file, I tried to keep it simple and straightforward to get the idea across.

Personally I would think you keep everything in a spreadsheet (XLS), and then use the spreadsheet export function to a tab-delimited file which could be parsed in a million ways, one of which could be for your posting to a forum! Standardize the data (typically called 'normalization' in programmer-speak) and let code transform it into the need at hand.

SteveRoss 04-03-2007 11:58 AM

I just found www.kayakmobile.com and I like it. I built my own site, 1gpa.com Mobile Start Page months ago and posted it here and about 200 people a day use it. It's more for surfing the web and toggling images on and off. Kayakmobile.com is different in that it's to find food, hotels, etc. when you are on the road. It works really well and displays prices of hotels too.

For the Books & Literature section:

DailyLit: Read books by email
http://dailylit.com/

Another BBF member posted this on a thread I started about SMS novels, and it works fantastically with the BB. Simply go to the site, find a book and put in an email that goes to your BB (I used my @yahoo.com via BIS one). I used a desktop web browser to actually find the book and subscribe initially, but you could do it from your phone.

The novel parts are easily readable on a bus ride and so forth, and you can manage it all right from your phone - get the next part sent, pause sending, configure when to send, etc.

This is one of my new favourite sites, I read two installments of a sci-fi book on the ride to work this morning. :)

PdaMobileWeb.com Portal

Hello everyone. New Blackberry user here coming from the Palm and Windows Mobile world. I run http://pdamobileweb.com as a hobby and wanted to add it to the list. Its a pretty complete portal of mobile-friendly links that I've been maintaining for a while. It has over 400 links and growing, all of them viewable from a Blackberry of course. However, I just started adding Blackberry-specific links to it in the PDA's/Blackberry category.

This list here is a great and I already see a bunch of sites that I should add to PdaMobileWeb, but if you'd like to submit more, here is Recommend Link form.

Thanks!
