How to fix "java.lang.NullpointerExeception" error

I'm new to Blackberry. Just bought the bold and every time I get a phone call I get the above error message. I see that it is not uncommon and users experience it under different circumstances. How can I fix this? Do I have to re-load the device software? Where do I go to do that? Please help. This isn't right - I just bought it and I haven't even loaded anything onto it. HELP. Thanks.

if you have no 3rd part apps or new theme, I am not sure. i thought it was caused by one of those.

Do you have any 3rd party applications that activate on incoming calls or monitor the call log?

Some 3rd party applications that SEEM to work on the Bold sometimes do not. For example, let's say there is a ficticious "App X" that activates when you get new calls. Let's say that program is designed to simply display a bitmap that says "INCOMING CALL, Answer the Phone!" fullscreen. Internally, the program might use a graphic that looks at your phone model to determine the screensize and display the appropriate graphic file. So it has screens for various model BB's but not one for the Bold (even though the setup and config screens might work fine). The program will then throw an exception error when the phone rings because it can't find the 480x320 file.

(This was a simplified example for illustration purposes).

I got this error over and over one day. I called AT&T, took the battery out and when I put it back in, I could not get the Bold to turn back on. I had to get it replaced with it being less than a month old.

Ya that does happen to some people out there I only get this error message when I was loading an app or something and the file is really big then it will pop up this msg and close the program I was trying to open.

I've had my Bold since the 4th and have had the "java.lang.NullpointerExeception" error come up when doing a battery pull. The only fix I've seen is doing another battery pull until it comes up ok. When it comes up in this condition, I have no "messages" icon and a number of other icons are missing, and it defaults to the default theme. Really starting to piss me off. I'll have a look at any 3rd party apps I may have installed that could be causing it.

I did a battery pull and it rebooted. THe message is gone now. I hope it doesnot comeback. We'll see. Thanks for the input.

I upgraded from .167 to .210 os on the bbb last night and the java error no longer appears on boot. Looks like a fixed bug.

I got the error when I changed my home screen image to one that was stored on my microSD card. When I changed it back to an image that was on the device itself the error was gone.

just my two cents.

Kewl, thx for the tip about the background. Wonder if it works better on device memory. Yeah, no third party apps, new Bold, replacing the one that took a swim in my toilet! These things don't like water, so I don't suggest giving them a bath. Thank God for handset protection! I restored all my data but no 3rd party apps.

Oh yeah, and running the latest O/S. Always run the latest O/S. 4.6.0.190.

I get the error on boot up... and I press OK and it's gone?

i got that error originally on 4.6.0.125, i upgraded, all was good. Recently I was on .190 and everything was great until I installed Unite This! Then I would get that dreaded error on hard/soft boots. Even after a wipe, install again, all would be well, then because I am a sucker for punishment, installed Unit This! and yup, errors again. I contacted BB Support, and gave them a couple sets of logs, and they came back saying its not to do with Unit This!, I am like, well only after I install Unit This, I get these errors. They are still looking into this, as it is now passed to another dept other than Unite This!.

So.... along comes 4.6.0.210, and am ecstatic to say that all is working flawless now - with Unite This! installed. Love it! I havent talked to BB Support after this install because I am not sure how they will respond when I tell them I have a leaked Beta OS on my phone now. I actually told them that I have lost confidence in this phone and to send me a new one.. so am waiting to hear back... this is pre .210.

Hey, thanks for the tip, didn't realize there was a leaked version of .210 out there. We'll see how it goes!
