FB is one of the biggest and worst of the social sites. People blindly give information thinking only ones they want will see it.
Ever read the agreement?

Carnegie Mellon researchers determined that it would take the average person 76 work days to read all the privacy policies they agreed to each year.

Nothing is yours once you post it on FB. They can sell it or use it anyway they want.
They sell access to businesses HR departments and others for gathering info on potential employees or current ones looking for a promotion or new job.
The new tracking software included in the mobile app is removing all privacy and people are clueless.

It should be social media sites I guess that is a greater term compared to social networking. I would have to agree with you guys people don't think before they do some posting sharing but still, it's a free country anyone can do whatever they want.

Well maybe, If anyone posts something that harms in any way another then guess what happens?
The poster gets a big legal problem. Ask the newlyweds who posted on social media about their photographer and ended up loosing a slander suit. one million award to the photographer.
Too many people post before activating their brains or check the filters.

So your suggesting the various marketing companies paying the carriers are not using the built in GPS on cell phones to know where users are when users are using ( constantly ) social network apps and suggesting nearby stores who have sales etc.?

Not sure if website builders are some form of social networking website. But for me, they are because you can somehow interact with your audience there too with the comments section or the guestbook. My favorite right now is hPage: https://www.hpage.com . I created a website there some months ago focusing on topics of beauty and fashion and I regularly interact with readers through the guestbook feature.

Web sites that allow users to build web sites always have a reason they are free. they use the information collected for marketing and other use companies are willing to pay for.

Facebook's new Portal and Portal Plus is an effort to keep users. As stated the older social media applications are loosing. With Facebook's latest security issues this may just be an attempt to change direction or distract to a new product.
