Garmin with Tour

I have loaded Garmin mobile onto my Tour but the app says there is no GPS available and I need to pair a GPS bluetooth device. If GPS is unlocked shouldn't it find it - or do I need to use the non-GPS version like I did for my 8830 & Storm?

Thanks for any help.

Is your GPS on the device set to 'Location On' or is set for E911 Only ?
Options > Advanced Options > GPS > GPS Services = ?

Yes, my GPS is set to Location ON.

Since Tour is touted as the first Verizon Blackberry device with GPS I assumed it would be supported.

Garmin's website does NOT list the 9630 as a valid Blackberry for their program.

There was another thread showing that the Tour's GPS does not work with 3rd party apps at this time, confirmed by RIM.

It works with google maps and bbweather, they are 3rd party.

That other thread is wrong, and if RIM confirmed it, they're wrong too.

I'm using TeleNav on my Tour and loving it. It works great with the built in GPS and it works with both CDMA and GSM. (I have an AT&T SIM in my Tour and have two lines active.)

Then something has happened between the time that thread was made and now because Telenav works beautifully on my Tour as well. Even a one hour drive through the Rocky Mts. And it was picking up satellite signals off and on the whole way. No radio signal needed. I was VERY impressed!

If I recall (not always possible), Garmin for the Tour will be out next week. I don't recall where I read that.

Verizon/Tour GPS definitely works with 3rd party apps - I'm using about a dozen of them. Garmin doesn't yet support the Tour, but it's Garmin's failing - not the Tour's. Tour GPS works great - just as accurate, maybe MORE accurate than my handheld Vista Cx, though a bit slower to respond.

Which apps?

What are the dozens of gps apps you are able to use? Anyone get the AllSport to work?

I am in the market for a tour, how do the two lines work. Are you live to recieve calls from both lines or do you have to choose which is active? TIA

As far as GPS-related apps, I'm currently using:

CacheBerry
Poynt
Where
GoogleMaps
BlackBerry Maps
BlackStar
VZW Navigator
UberTwitter
BerryWeather
BBWeather

I also tried Nav4All; GPSed, and a few others. They all worked, but were not what I wanted, so they were deleted. I have yet to find a GPS-related app that didn't work.

Here is the link for Garmin for the Tour. I've dl'd it and it works great.

Not a bad little application. Better routing than my Navigon GPS. A little slow on the recalculate if you deviate from the route, but I suspect that has just as much to do with the fact that the GPS chip in the tour doesn't have the same performance as one in a dedicated NAv unit.

Don't know if I'll spend $99 when the trial period expires (since I have a GPS), but I would love to have this as a back-up while on travel.

Reasons why I'm not impressed with Garmin Mobile for Tour

Hi guys,

I thought I'd chime in on my experience with a 7 day trial of Garmin Mobile for Blackberry, running on my Tour. Let me say first, I used Garmin Mobile XT on 2 different WinMo devices, and loved everything about it except (1) the external bluetooth GPS puck, and (2) the startup time. So I had high expectations.

Here are my probs with the BB version:
  • The font size for maps is unreal in how small it is
  • The 3d view is by far the most usable, but you can only do 3d if you're navigating, not if you're just driving and viewing the map
  • 2d maps in the Mobiel XT version were just like the Garmin dedicated units. 2D maps on the BB version look an awful lot like Google maps. Except they load a lot slower and don't work as well.

So I guess for now I'll stick with TeleNav, which I don't love but IMHO is way better than Garmin.

My $0.02...

Mitch
