Vascellaro Research In Motion Ltd. and Verizon Wireless today plan to announce the launch of a BlackBerry "World Edition" smart phone that enables Verizon customers to roam on overseas networks thanks to a dual-mode chip that is compatible with both Verizon's technology and wireless technology prevalent overseas. And a spiffy looking device at that!

Article indicated height of the new unit is a fraction taller than the current 8800. That will put a delay on skins, cases, etc. Seidio, time to step it up and get these accessories lined up for the 8830.

can't wait to get mine!
|
what I want to know is if it supports EVDO (legacy) or EVDO rev. A. If it's a Rev A - it's a done deal for me. Yay (keeping fingers crossed) for corp discount! =)
|
No mention of GPS - and note that the GRPS spectrums are the Europe ones only, so don't think of using it in the US on anything other than VZ.
EDIT - YES NO UNLOCKING FOR US USE OR ROAMING IN THE US! |
Ninja edit: wait, are you talking about roaming outside of VZ network?

I think he was pointing this out for those thinking of unlocking the 8830 and using it with GSM carriers in the US (as well as roaming on GSM in the US). |

is the world capability what makes this the 8830 and not another 8800? sorry, might be a stupid question..
|
To my knowledge, the model number usually indicates a change in the hardware.
Also, to the naysayers of CDMA RIM devices, it took only a couple of months for this to come to Verizon...na na na na na na! :P |

Haven't seen this posted yet, but RIM created another Blackberry Feature site.

Ok, so if I'm not traveling overseas and don't have a preference for Verizon, is there any reason to wait for this device instead of getting the 8800 now from Cingular? Thanks.

Interesting to me that they are still only claiming email capability in 60 countries and voice in 120. Way to go on the data roaming agreements.
Taken from VZW press release: Verizon Wirelessxxx8217; new Global BlackBerry service allows customers to place and receive voice calls from more than 150 countries and send and receive e-mails in the United States, Canada and more than 60 countries worldwide.... and under specs it says EV-DO/GPRS network connection for high-speed data transfer in more than 60 countries. |
