Most likely dirt, but could be other things as well. You might look on youtube, there are several videos giving instructions on how to clean or replace the trackball. If you aren't comfortable performing these activities, take it to a repair center.

As above, it is probably dirt or lint.

Turn the device off. Press and hold the ball and roll in the direction that it DOES NOT work correctly. Continue pressing in and roll in all directions for at least a minute.

Turn the device on and see if it is working as it should. If so, you are good to go. And carry it in a case, not in your pocket.

You can also try pressing the ball in and shooting some canned air all around it.

If you are a mechanic, or exposed to grinder dust, roll your trackball up and down by pressing a clean fridge magnet against it. If metallic dust isn't the problem, gently hoover the track ball alternatly running the ball up and down.
My track ball stops working at least once a week because of grinder dust. the magnet trick saves me having to keep dismantling the trackball which is a pain on the 8900

I learned how to clean the track ball without removing anything (courtesy: YouTube). Take a sheet of paper and gently rub the berry on it with the track ball facing the paper. it should be done in a few seconds. If you use a white sheet you will probably see the dirt as well.

Doesn't work for grinder dust though as that stuff sticks into the soft rubber of the scroller wheels. Gave me a good idea to try lying the BB on top of the magnet so that gravity helps. Cheers for that!
