Locking the 8700 with a keypress?

One of my few annoyances with this very well-designed machine (my first BB) is that the only way to lock it is to get to the home page, then scroll all the way down, zero in on the lock icon, and click the wheel. Seems there'd be a global hotkey combo to accomplish this. Anyone know of one?

Thanks,
Tim

"k" if you don't have dial from home screen.
and you can always use alt-enter

I usually holster my BB when I'm not using it so it automatically locks

Even with dial from home, if you quickly tap 'k', it'll still lock the keyboard. However, recently, I've lost the ability to lock the keyboard when I put the device in the holster... Not that I necessarily want to have it reenabled, but if i want to, how do I do that?

When I "even with dial from home, quickly tap K" it does not lock the keyboard. Anyone else get this to work?

I have set my convenience key to lock but would love to use the K key instead. (I am using Tmo v4.1.0.284)

alt-enter is perfect, just what I was looking for, thanks!
incidentally, "k" doesn't work for me either. And how do I check my OS version?

NJBlackBerry 05-03-2006 05:03 AM

1) Make sure Dial from Home Screen is set to No in the Phone / Options section. It must be set to No.

2) Lightly touch the K key from the home screen - do not depress and hold it - that will try to add a speed dial to the K key

This does not work on any 71xx BlackBerrys but works on every other BlackBerry. Has for years.

I figured you'd be able to speed dial an application like assign the letter p to the keylock but I guess not.. Its definetely something they missed if there is no solution

I have dial from home screen enabled and all my shortcuts work, except the ones on the numbered keys obviously.

chapaj 05-04-2006 08:06 AM

On the 8700 is there a way to switch to vibrate profile from the home screen? On the 7100, you could hold down the # key for a few seconds to do it.

BBRaffey 05-04-2006 08:18 AM

I also have dial from home enabled and the "k" key works to lock the keyboard. In order to use the number keys as shortcuts you must press the "num" key first then the shortcut key. For example by pressing "num" then the "4/s" key the search function comes up. This works on my 8700c, I am not certain if it works on other bbs.

As NJBB pointed out from above, you just tap the 'k' key, not press it for any length of time.

The correct method is front convenience key for Zen apps menu, side convenience key is for locking.
Anything else is just not on!

"love me, love my Blackberry configuration"

The-Red-Elf 05-04-2006 01:25 PM

Thanks for that tip BBRaffey, I can use all the shortcuts now. Goodbye trackwheel.
