9800 vs 9780
 

If you had no BlackBerry device whatsoever and were given the choice between the 2, which ones would you honestly and why would you prefer one over the other?

I voted for the 9780 as I had previoulsy owned he 9800 for a week, while the device itself was nice, and the touch screen was cool to play with. It didn't suiote my daily needs.

The battery was not bad, but nothing compared to the BOLD series.

Additionally, my main gripe was the virual / phsyical keyboard of the Torch, the Virtual keyboard is not my taste, and I thought I would be ok with its physical keyboard but nope, the buttons are too flat for my liking. The BOLD's buldged out well defined buttons are way easier to type on as opposed to that of the Torch's.

Finally, I don't know why RIM decided to remove the second conveniece key which was on the left, but that was a bummer for me as I use both convenience keys equally.

Went back n forth from the Bold to the Torch a few times, ending up keeping the Torch because of the larger screen. I love the Bold form factor but while the screen res is great for messaging it's just to small for things like browsing, plus I find the keyboard a bit too cramped (not that the Torch is better). Tough call between the 2, but for now the Torch wins incrementally.

FWIW I put OS6 on my Bold and it was really excellent, almost enough to keep me there awhile longer.

I really hope the OS 6 works out. I just ordered the 9800, if it doesn't cut the mustard, I'll be switching to Android.

OS 6 is fine, I like it and it does it for me.

Only issue is that some of the applications Ihad on my bold are not yet available in that OS. This is a pain and I am waiting for them to come out.

While I prefer the 97xx series keyboard (old 8800 fan here!), the larger screen and touchscreen features of the 9800 are impossible to ignore. Personally, I'd like a mashup of the PlayBook and 9800. I'm currently using a Dell Streak <insert Android jokes/insults here> and LOVE the 5" screen and only having ONE device and cable to carry. For me, it's Lord of the Gadgets - one gadget to rule them all!

I handled a 9800 in an AT&T store and kind of liked it, but the screen is still too small for my tastes. Heavy messengers and light emailers who don't surf the web much and don't use their phone as their primary GPS will still prefer the awesomeness that is the 9780. BB now offers a form factor for almost everyone. Maybe I could live with a 9780 / PlayBook combo. That BB PB is suweet hardware.;-)

Even though I chose the Torch which I have had since launch day, I would certainly give it more than a week to decide. The keyboard like anything else takes effort and time. If I did not like a device, I would choose aspect of it that are far more important. It is definitely not the very best keyboard but it is better than most. I have large fingers and I can fly on the physical keyboard. It is getting tiring seeing 9780 owners posting in this forum as their way to reassure themselves that they made the right choice.

Well I had the 9800 for a week and for sure 9800 sucks in comparison to 9780. Quality of slider and touch response is not there yet for BB--but much improved from the storm.
Maybe the ones who are defending the Torch did not get a chance to go back to their provider to exchange it for the bold 9780. I feel for you guys :)))):smile:

I find myself using the virtual keyboard on the 9800 more than the physical one. It takes a few days but you get used to it. Also, it is weird, but even though the keys are smaller on the 9800 than on 9700 series devices, I find them easy to type on because of the "thinness" of the device when you have the keyboard out.

I think OS 6 still has a few very minor bugs in it, but overall it is very refined and easy to work with. These bugs will be present on both 9800's and 9780's.

Also, after using the large screen on the Torch, I would have a difficult time going back to the 97xx screen size.

@Dirtywater24: A word of caution....if you are used to what a BlackBerry can do and you think you are "just going to switch to Android", be ready for some irritation and headaches. Android is neat, but it falls short in many ways, particularly the inability to sync your tasks and notes, and the inability to recognize common symbols used in your phone directory to indicate extensions. If you are a high school/college kid who has around 200 phone numbers, mostly withiout extensions, you won't care. But if, like me, you have over 2,500 mostly business numbers in Outlook that sync to your handset, the fact that you will have to go through all of these and program special "pause" and "wait" characters so that your Android handset knows how to dial will be a major pain. I really wanted to switch to an Android device when my recent upgrade came up, but I just couldn;t get any Android phone to do what a BlackBerry does. Maybe in future versions of Android...

Smaller screen.....
No touchscreen.....

Just be happy with whatever phone suits your needs. Who gives a sh^t whether yours is "better" than another. That is not even what this thread was about. Instead of spending all day comparing the specs of different devices on your computer, try getting out of the house and maybe dating a woman...it's alot more fun ;)

I agree that the 9780 owners need to get a life. If that form factor works for you, then fine. Both devices are great. My point was that if you do the testing before you leave the store and get a good device that you should give it a more substantial test than just a week as in the case of the OP. The combination of the touchscreen, trackpad, and physical keyboard make more options possible in messaging, web-browsing and overall productivity. With pinch to zoom, swipe and double tap, some of the keyboard shortcuts are not necessary anymore and these touchscreen capabilities are not present on the 9780. The Torch has keyboard shortcuts as well as a larger screen. You also don't have a virtual keyboard which I agree still needs improvement. You don't have the option to view things in landscape or portrait mode. It is also so much cooler to be able to pop the slide up to answer a call and pop it down to end one.

I have the both for my 2 SIM cards.
I "lol" when i take the Bold after the Torch :
MY AWFUL BIGS FINGERS TRY TO TOUCH THE POOR LITTLE SMALL 9780' SCREEN !!

Seriously, i use the bold for my second line and the Torch for the main line.
To navigate, with the Torch by the touch screen, you don't have to cry with the little trackpad.
For the keyboards, they are the sames for me : littles ! Sometimes, i take from my stock the real BB with the true keyboard : the 9000 Bold !!

At least, @crismas2011, you try to sell your stock of housse by put yours links every where ?

Get an app called Six Tools and it will give you THREE additional convenience keys. I have no connection with Six Tools; I just think it's a really useful addition to the Torch.

The Torch is my SEVENTH BB model, and it is the best. I discover new things every day that delight and amaze, even after having gone through the lengthy manual page by page.
