Can I set the backlight to stay on when 8100 is charging

I keep my new 8100 BB plugged in on my desk when I am not out of the office. Audible notices announce incoming email or phone calls, of course. But I would like to be able to look over and see the email title, or the caller Id, etc. My old BB (7290) worked this way and I got used to it. However I don't see any settings that relate to actions when the BB is plugged in. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you saying the Backlight does not come on when you receive a call?

I have mine plugged in on my desk and every time a get a call, the backlight comes on and I can see caller ID. I don't know where the setting is though...sorry.

There must be something wrong. When someone calls, the screen lights up before the 8100 vibrates/rings and then shows who is calling. You might want to get that checked.

It sounds like he is talking about emails and that sort of stuff. The screen will not illuminate on the 8100 except for phone calls.

Didn't BBLight have an optoin to light when charging? Will it work on the 8100?

Yes BB light does have an option for "on when charging". However, I found that when I enabled this on the 8100 the screen would blink. That is it would come on for a little while, then turn off, then in a second or two turn back on etc. etc. I found that annoying and disabled that feature in BB light. Apparantly that feature does not work correctly on the 8100

Really good to know. Maybe it is just my 8100, have had it for 5 days and still cannot go to any web sites using the browser either. Spoke to the people at the Tmo store and they said if I was still having problems with the internet today (I am) they will take it back and give me another one. Have to see how the new one does.

Speaking of the backlight, I've noticed that sometimes when I'm using my Pearl (navigating email/browsing/messaging) the backlight with become brighter than normal for a few seconds then dim back down to normal levels.

Anyone know why this is happening?

I don't think I am in control of it (normally I would just be sliding my finger across the key pad and it happens) and I wouldn't say it's a major problem but if anyone can offer an explanation I'd like to hear it.

Thanks for the feedback. I have only had my 8100 for a few days and had not noticed that the display does come on for incoming calls. So my only problem is with incoming emails and PaulMac seems to make it clear that this does not work.

What is this "BB Light" that has been mentioned several times in this thread? Is this an external ap I can download from somewhere? Or is it already on my phone?

Configures your BlackBerry light to stay always-on when out of holster. Or automatically turns on backlight when you hit a keypress (a problem on older BlackBerry models)! Be warned, this application affects battery life!

Or, you can use the link I provide (above) and download BBLight via over the air (OTA).

Why don't you try a demo of PocketDay? One of its utility settings makes the backlight come on when a message is received. I'm sure that's not enough of a feature to justify the purchase price, but there are many other features (and limitations in the native apps) that make PocketDay indispensable for a lot of users.

Lock the handheld and see what happens then. I have the same problem. I think someone needs to update the BBLight code for OS v4.2. I would, but I am no developer.

MrKyoo 11-04-2006 09:25 AM

Ahh, I see. It does blink when the device is locked. I noticed though it does not blink when I disabled the xxx8220;On External Powerxxx8221; in BBLight.

Or could it be not working cause I've not yet done the update for my phone?
