Dropped my Curve 8520 in a puddle - HELP!

Yesterday I was on my way to a bus stop with my BB in my pocket (never doing that again) and I realised we will be late so we start running. I realised i'd lost my BB and later find it in a muddy puddle.

I went home and took out the battery and dried as much water off as possible. I then stupidly turned it back on and started using it as it seemed to be working ok. I went into the 02 shop and they said If it did break , it's water damage and not under warranty (the thing inside is red so they know). A little while after, the 'H' turned into a 'Y' and it kept on freezing and i had to keep re-booting it.
About 4 hours after the incident I took out the battery and sim and left them in my bag. I then came home, put all parts in a bag of rice and am planning on leaving it for 3 days.

IS THERE ANY HOPE? thank you.

You may have killed it when you began using it again. By the sound of things the keyboard fault may be due to moisture that remained.

The correct procedure (a bit late now) is outlined here: Got Your BlackBerry Wet? - BlackBerryFAQ

You may wish to replace problem parts to see if it fixes the problems, such as a new keyboard, although this does not guarantee to fix it.

You can buy parts from places such as ebay.

Okay. I only used it for about 3 hours and I didn't leave it on for the entire time. I am leaving it to dry - how long would you reccomend leaving it for?

Re: Dropped my Curve 8520 in a puddle - HELP!

It's not the water that kills the blackberry, instead its when the water is present and electricity is introduced which can damage components. IMHO you seem to be quite lucky that your device appears to have only the one fault.

I recommend that you remove the battery and place the device on top of a warm radiator wrapped inside a cloth or tea-towel for atleast 48 hours, probably more.

Or, following the information in the FAQ, put it in a bag of rice, sealed and without the battery, for 3-5 days.

I recommend following the guidance as found in our FAQ and covered by NJBlackberry above.

what is it about uncooked rice that helps with a case of water damage?

It draws out moisture.

Err..why not get yourself some silica gel desiccant?

Re: Dropped my Curve 8520 in a puddle - HELP!

It's a matter of what's easy for just about anyone, and just about everyone has rice, or can very easily get it. Not so desiccant.

@ gambit, water evaporates until the vapor pressure reaches saturation and vapor and liquid are in equilibrium. Uncooked rice is dry and will absorb a lot of water by weight. Hence, water vapor is absorbed by the rice, lowering the water vapor pressure, additional liquid evaporates to maintain equilibrium...vapor is absorbed...more liquid evaporates...and eventually all liquid has evaporated and been absorbed by the rice.

Be prepared for the device to start failing in a month or so. It might not happen, but start preparing now.

Backup the device regularly so that when it fails, you won't lose all your data. And start saving to purchase a new device.
