BlackBerry In-flight Synchronization
My client provides in-flight broadband satellite service for business aircraft passengers. We are looking for a way for our aircraft passengers to synchronize their BlackBerry Devices during flight. The passengers do not have access to a cellular network, but they do have internet access via VPN. Also, the passenger do not have a laptop.
How can they synchronize their BB devices with a hard wire synch through the VPN connection? How can they synchronize their BB devices with a wireless synch through the VPN connection? Any assistance is greatly appreciated. |
What you are asking can't be done.
You need to be authenticated to the RIM network (using your Blackberry Data Plan) on your device in order to send/receive e-mail. You can't sync e-mail any other way on the Blackberry. The most you could do is a PIM sync, which wouldn't include e-mail. |
If you plug it in to a PC running the blackberry software, doesn't it redirect it over the internet?

Specifically this part --> "Also, the passenger do not have a laptop." Additionally, even with a laptop, you can't sync e-mail. That's not how Blackberry devices work. The redirector would be useless. E-mail is only delivered to a Blackberry through a wireless (cellular) network. |
This is all correct. You need the cellular network in order to get the email onto the device. No network, no email.
That being said, it's possible that this could work in the future with one of the wi-fi enabled BB's that is *rumored* to be coming out this year. As a business jet pilot I'm quite interested in this feature myself! But I want the Pearl with wi-fi. |
