Good info but it doesn't address the fact that existing handhelds need to be at v4.0 for the workaround.
That's a pretty major concern when you have around 2000 handhelds at v3.x

I hope they don't roll this out. Suppose I work in an office that does not receive signal in the building. I have to go outside to read my email? What I currently do now is go outside, let my emails get pushed to me. Come back in and read them...

Also what if I am on a plane and need to read my pending emails that I have not read yet. I am SOL?

I agree with deficitism that this is a step back, albeit a required one for this workaround to work.

With that said, I don't think its going to come to this. The USPTO expects possible final rulings at the end of January, with the final judgement on the injunction to be set for early February. If final rulings come down from the USPTO prior to the ruling on the injunction, then most likely it won't be awarded. If the judgement comes down just prior to the USPTO final rulings, then I think there will be an immediate appeal to the injunction, one that will be granted on the grounds of the USPTO impending decision. Judge Spencer should acknowledge the USPTO's decision to fasttrack their process and allow it to run its course. Otherwise, there's a lot of unneeded money being wasted.

So now we know why they haven't just rolled out the new s/w. It would be a big step backwards if you have to manually cause it to download each message.

now all we need to do is write an app that pulls all of the emails as soon as the header is received. This will address the concerns regarding signal availability.

Maybe RIM could implement that later. Push a header and pull the message automatically.

Or better yet, push a command to the phone saying "something just came in, time to check back with the server and download it"

That document discusses MDS (& MDS Push) which is nothing new. There stands a good chance that this article may be a work of fiction attempting to gain credibility buy showcasing a technical document from RIM which although may appear to be similar is actually quite different.

Update 2000 older handsets or build a new non-RIM infrastructure and reissue 2000 non-RIM devices.

Either way would be "hands on" if RIM was forced to shutdown! :(

I think that we all have been worried for nothing. Although RIMM's stock has been a little volatile of late, someone must know something, their stock jumped over 10% today!

I think that rise has more to do with the earnings report yesterday.

Even with the earnings, if the general view was that they were going to lose the case, I don't think their stock would have jumped that much.

This seems to be almost like the "Send header only" option currently available from the BIS. I can select a group of messages, then do "retrieve body" on them, then read them on a flight. I did this the first couple of times I traveled overseas and wasn't sure what the roaming charges would be like.

I found this article. Gives a little bit of info I think on what they plan to do to deploy the workaround. Dated 1/25/06 but I think it is something that everyone figured they would do anyway
