Mapquest Navigator - doesn't seem popular around here...
 

I'm currently using the 7130e on Sprint. I've downloaded Navigator, but I haven't been able to "acquire GPS satellite." I'm looking for some help on this, but I see it's not a very popular app.

Is anyone using it, particularly w/ the 7130e?

MapQuest: Get It Now

It's for the 7130e and 8703e (via Sprint), though I've heard the 7130 version works on the Pearl and the 8703 version works on the 8800.

Actually just got it working after updating my firmware. Not a bad little program, though the website doesn't say how long the trial lasts.

I had downloaded the sprint version for the 8703(?) running on my 8800, it works. I dind't like the user interface as much as TeleNav. Stinson says they're coming out with in upgrade "in short order". It'll be nice when TeleNav, Garmin and MapQuest have versions available, maybe the price will come down.

I likewise had no trouble getting the 8703 (Sprint) version working on my 8800C. Still getting to know the program, but my initial opinion is that it is not in the same league as Telenav (either 4.7 or 5.1).

My short list of pros and cons is as follows:

Telenav Pros

1. Blackberry Address Book Integration, I find it very useful to not have to re enter addresses that are already in the address book. Also is nice to be able to select an address from address book as destination and then use it to search POI near that point. Similar to the functionality that Beyond 411 has with using an address book entry as a search point.

2. Much better graphics, I find the 3D view on Telenav to be a big help at Interstate interchanges and complicated intersections.

3. Spoken directions include street names, I didn't realize how much this saves me from needing to look at the screen, compared to turn left or turn right directions from Mapquest.

4. Ability to phone in address, This is actually pretty useful and works well.

5. Traffic data (in 5.1), haven't yet determined how accurate or effective the re-routes are.

Mapquest Pros

1. Larger fonts (for my old eyes)

2. Better quality audio, (voice is easier to understand, although lack of street names almost negates the higher quality IMO)

3. Faster reroutes (Don't always get spoken directions during re-route, although the new route is depicted on screen)

4. Much better at initial orientation. By this I mean if you are moving or off the roadway (parking lot) at the time of initial routing, Mapquest seems to catch up quicker than Telenav.

I think that either program will get you where you're going, but I have become accustomed to hearing the street names called out, and feel like this is an important capability. If I hadn't experienced the overall Telenav package, I would likely think that Mapquest was a great navigation program. It seems to work well, it just isn't as polished or capable as Telenav in my opinion.

I always try to factor in the familiarity aspect when evaluating a program I've been using vs. a new one, but in this case I do not believe that is a significant factor due to I've only been using the Telenav V 5.1 for about a week or so. The interface, etc. is so drastically different than 4.7, that it feels like a completely new program for me.

At any rate, YMMV and I'd recommend trying them both.

I've also notice that MQN doesn't slow down my bb nearly as much as telenav does. Overall, I agree that Telenav is the better app, but, with all of its features, it runs very heavy.

I was able to bring down the 7103e version for Sprint for my T-MO 8100 Pearl.

Here are my initial assesments
1. Be sure you have your GPS (Puck or Internal) on before starting the program. Starting my puck afterwards didn't connect to the software.

It has a nice screen that shows your Long / Lat, how many satellites you are tracking. The time displayed was GMT rather than local. Elevation was shown in miles. I would find it more interesting to be in feet as that is a finer granularity.

2. Directions were loud and clear. It even gives the distinction when you are making a turn that it said "At the end of the road, turn right"

3. Re-routes were fast. System is unique that it downloads the maps and such so that if you go out of network, it will continue to provide directions vs. BBMaps, Google Maps that require network connectivity for map data.

4. System provides statistics about your trip once you enter it in. Ave. MPH, Est arrival time, distance and (Awww, I forgot)

5. Map rotates around you and orientates itself so that you are driving phone up. Map shows satellite strength, direction of travel, time left in trip, current road, next road turn on, distance to next event and graph bars when you down to about 500ft. Screen stays on all the time where Google Maps was only active during the backlight time settings. Tracking while driving seemed to be either same or better than others when approaching intersections.

6. System has daytime / nighttime modes. Nighttime mode doesn't broadcast a lot of light.

Overall, a great product, IMO. There are some statistics that would be a nice to have. Such as total trip time (Start of navigation entry to arrival at destination), moving trip time (accumulation of time when actually moving)

I supply more info as I test it more.

So has anyone had their trial period expire yet? I don't see anywhere to put in a "registration code."

3.o is in the works. Hard to compare to 5.1 TN till its out. Note that they DL much more route up front so that is why you see the comments below. See my tips page for that point.

Anyone know how much it costs after the trial period?

I suspect you don't see the registration screen because it automatically starts your subscription once the trial period is over. It would be nice to know how much your going to see on your bill.

If it was less expensive than Telenav I might consider switching. I don't use it that often so, a lower monthly cost appeals to me.
