Voice and Data simultaneously

Is the Tour capable of this?

agtprvctr 07-15-2009 01:22 PM

someone correct me if i'm wrong but i believe it is a limitation of verizon's cdma implementation.

I was reading in the tips & tricks book (yes, I looked at it...) that you will only see the 3G indicator if you are roaming internationally. Voice & Data at the same time will only work on 3G, if I read it right.

It is currently a limitation of the CDMA network. You will not get simultaneous voice and data on Sprint or Verizon, or any North American carrier (GSM or CDMA) with the Tour. International countries that use the 2100 frequency band will work with simultaneous voice and data.

Why oh why would anyone want that?!?!?!

Who among us can truly talk WHILE we are surfing? :)

jsconvyers:

So are you saying that only the Tour is incapable? For example, other Blackberrys, such as the Bold can do this?

jsconyers 07-15-2009 01:57 PM

The Bold can do this on AT&T's network, yes. The Tour cannot AFAIK.

When I had my 8120 (WiFi on) I would talk either on speaker phone or BT and BBM at the same time!!! I miss not being able to do that :-(

Yes, I have the Bold as my personal, and it's able to do both data and voice simultaneously (helped my buddy look for a restaurant while i was on the phone with him)

Unfortunately all those who said that it's a limitation of the CDMA network is correct. I've tried this with my BlackBerry Tour and once the phone comes up, my data is hosed, until I'm at the end of my session. Now since it has GSM, I'm pretty sure it can do simultaneous data and voice given it's HSPA/UMTS.

Hope this answers anyone's call to question

The Tour can do it when running on GSM networks, not when running on CDMA networks.

You should specify that it will do that on GSM 3G networks. It will not do this with AT&T as the Tour will pick up the 2100 3G band and AT&T uses the 1900 band.

My hope is that the CDMA technology will be there to eventually do the task

jsconyers 07-16-2009 09:06 AM

Looks like you are going to have to wait for them to move to LTE before you see that. That is for Verizon anyway. Sprint looks to be going towards WiMax.

amit118 07-16-2009 10:57 AM

Does anyone know an approximate time when LTE will be available?

Blackberrys are known for great productivity and multi-tasking, and it (VZ) takes a lot away from those who takes advantages of what RIM has to offer. It is unfortunate how a carrier cannot cater to devices so established and successful.

Yes, thank you for the adroit refinement.
