Upgraded to OS 4.5.77 - can't open attachments
 

Today I upgraded a few things and now I'm having trouble viewing attachments. I have BB 8130 and I upgraded to OS 4.5.77. Along with the new OS came Data Viz "Documents to go." When I registered the product I was prompted to upgrade to their version 1.005 (030). (I also upgraded Empower Pro email viewer to version 3.0.72.7.)

Anyway - to test out "Documents To Go" I emailed myself a Word document (Microsoft Office 97) as an attachment. When I click on the email, I can view the e-mail and I can see that there is a Word document as an attachment. But I can't open it. When I press the blackberry button to try to open the document, nothing happens. Any ideas on this? I'm thinking that something is in conflict here... Any assistance with this greatly appreciated. Check out the thread on attachments with Empower and OS 4.5. Empower is not yet upgraded to work your version .77.

Thanks, I'll have to see if Empower has a version compatible with 4.5.77.

As of today they don't. The other thread I mentioned is where I posted the info the sent me in response to my issue with .81. They said they would update their advertising today also but I haven't seen it done yet.

Here is a response I got from Empower early this morning. Since I downloaded v72, I must need the v80 they mention:

Thank you for writing to us. The compatibility of Empower Pro on OS 4.5 depends on the exact version of OS 4.5. Unlike older OSes like 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3 etc, in OS 4.5 there are two sections. While Empower Pro works perfectly on OS v4.5.0.18 and v4.5.0.37 there are some versions like v4.5.0.55 and v4.5.0.77 which do not allow Empower Pro to access emails with attachments.

So, depending on which exact OS 4.5 version you upgrade to - you will need either Empower Pro v.72 or v.80.

While it is true that OS 4.5 has its own native html-view, there are a number of reasons why people continue to use Empower Pro on OS 4.5 and even on Bold. One is that Empower Pro formats better, is more sleek and has features like auto-downloading of images and Image Cache, Add To Task and Add to Calendar etc. which are not available in the native viewer.

Sorry, the Empower version 3.0.80.7 still doesn't allow you to view an email with an attachment in Empower. Empower is patched so that emails with attachments are automatically switched to the native BB html email viewer because Empower cannot open the attachments in OS 4.5.0.55 or 4.5.0.77 or 4.5.0.81.

Furthermore, in order to view all emails (without attachments) using Empower, you need to disable the native html email viewer.

The developers are working on the issue but no timeframe was given.

So if I want to view attachments (using Documents to go) I should remove Empower Pro? Until the issue is resolved?

No, you can still use it.

I found that some emails were appearing in Empower and some were appearing in the native viewer. The folks at Empower told me that I would need to disable the native viewer in order to see all emails in Empower.

Empower cannot access attachments so the new patch automatically switches those emails to the native viewer so the attachments can be read in docs 2 go.

My concern was that emails with attachments would then not have any html viewing capability.

So, for the time being I have uninstalled Empower and will see what they do to catch up to the newer OS. For now it was a waste of money for me to buy it 2 months ago. Hopefully they will correct the problem and I'll reinstall in the near future.

I was able to get to version 3.0.80.7 by going ota to www.getempower.com/ota/latest

It works as you described. On any email with an attachment, it reverts to non-HTML. But it does in those cases allow you to open the attachment with Documents to go.

Since I get so few Word attachments, I can live with this situation.

I'm not sure what I am gaining by continuing with Empower Pro, but I plan to stay with it for now. I suppose I should see what email looks like at v4.5 without Empower Pro to make the comparison.
