8900 Camera Test

Would someone with a Javelin mind doing a quick camera test for me? When I had a nokia e71 I would use the camera to capture business cards, but on my current 8310 the camera can't capture the cards legibly.

Could someone take pictures of:
  1. Business Card
  2. A4 Sheet of paper with printed text

Thanks!

the 8900 has autofocus

I have an 8300 also and im quite aware of your concerns. The 8900 DOES NOT have this issue.

That's great news, and thanks for responding.

So, if the Javelin has an auto focus feature that the Curve is lacking, does the Bold have this same auto focus?

Just curious, what would you do with the pic of a business card? Did you have software to convert to contact information? This might be of some use for me!

Sadly, I don't know of any software that can do OCR *on* the blackberry. I use a webservice called Evernote for this purpose. I email the pictures to my Evernote account, which makes them searchable. Not quite as good as direct conversion to contacts, but still better than a drawer full of business cards

Gotcha. So far I've just used a business card scanner with ocr that scans directly into outlook contacts. Sorry if this went off topic.

@ elpha

The Bold does not have an autofocus function.

Awww, that sucks. I guess it's the Javelin for me. In a battle of Camera vs 3G, camera wins for me every time.

Just to confirm, I took a few pix of business cards and they come out legible. The pix themselves are sharp. Unfortunately the flash blast is too strong and makes the text harder to read in certain places. Any way to get around that issue?

Disable the flash?

Would you mind posting the images you took?

For some reason I'm unable to access the media card from the computer while docked! I'll try to upload them as soon as I've got around that.

I think the camera is great on this device!

This is exactly what I was looking for, and clearly the 8900 camera is waaaaay better at detail capture than the 8300!

Thanks!

agadgetgeek 12-12-2008 12:49 PM

No problem. Yeah I definitely agree. Well, better than the 8310 at least since that's what I upgraded from =).

The better camera is really key for me too, I would love to keep the better speakers of the Bold and the nice leather(like) back but I sold my digital camera a while back and the Bold just isnt good enough for the day to day pics I want to be able to take. IE: sell something on craigslist/ebay, my girlfriend in a great outfit, a dog in a silly hat I want to put on facebook etc etc The kind of thing that doesnt justify carrying a real camera around.

I completely agree. I carry a camera around in my backpack and I *still* think a high quality cell camera is hugely useful. It's so damn fast to go object->picture->email, I use cell cameras constantly.
