Why no homescreen volume control on 9650?

Before going to bed I adjust the "sound profile" to "phone calls only" in case I get an urgent call in the middle of the night. This profile allow for calls, but eliminates the notifications for any emails.
However, the default volume setting on my 9650 is pretty high at level #8..........it would wake up the dead.
On my old 8330 I could bring down the ringer volume just before going to bed by just using the side key. I see no volume indicator on the home screen on this 9650. Do I have to get into "Sound Profiles" each night to adjust the default volume setting, and then change it back in the morning?
And yes, I have searched the FAQ & Stinsonddog's Tip Site, but could not find anything on the 9650 from Verizon.

you can set up a new profile called "bed time" and have the volume lower in the profile.

Ditto creating and using a new profile. You could individualy enable/mute the email addresses, calendar, whatever. For example my night profile has phone and level 1 enabaled and everything else muted, and that profile is automatically selected when the device switches to sleep mode.

You could also try running the clock app in "Bedside Mode" before you go to bed. In the clock app, you can set the Bedside Mode Sound Profile to whatever you want. When you exit Bedside Mode, your sound profile returns to what you had set previously.

Using the clock app. you'll get the benefit of the sound profile you want and a dim clock to look at if you awake in the middle of the night.

It's pretty nifty.

I miswrote sleep mode when I meant bedside mode, and was trying to describe what arieltf posted above.

Be aware there is a setting if the OS includes bedside mode to automatically switch to bedside mode when charging, or not. I think it is set to switch by default. But if it doesn't, switch the setting.

What everyone else said...just edit the profile for "Phone calls only" to have a lower ring volume. This won't affect the ring volume on your other profiles like "Normal", etc.

Get a charging cradle for the nightstand, and set the phone via clock/bedside mode to automatically change the ring profile to "Phone calls only" during nighttime hours (2200-0700 or whenever you normally sleep). Then when you place the phone in the cradle, it automatically switches the ring profile for you. Get a call at night? Once you take the phone off the cradle it switches back to whatever day time profile you had it set for, with full functionality.
