sim card and unlocking

If I unlock my phone, will an international Sim card work on it? (specifically Germany). I am going to Europe this summer for an internship and I would like to bring my blackberry instead of buying a new phone there. Also, is there anyway to unlock my phone for free?

Welcome to forum... First make sure that the phone is a GSM phone with quad bands and then make sure that its unlocked. If this is a GSM phone then you can ask your provider (i.e. TMo, ATT) for a free unlock code if your payment is on good terms with them.
Otherwise its 5 $ to get it unlocked.
Once the BB is unlocked yes you will be able to use it while in .DE
Good luck

Using a pre-paid SIM will get you phone and sms. BlackBerry data is another animal all together.

You cannot have your BlackBerry associated with 2 BlackBerry data plans at the same time. You'll have to call your carrier and have your BlackBerry removed from your BIS plan in order to register it with a new carrier if you want to get BBM, email, web, etc.

You also have to find a provider that offers pre-paid BlackBerry data. Orange UK is one carrier that offers it, but there are darn few others. If you're using a Sprint 8330 it won't work in Europe on GSM. You'll need another device. That might be your best bet anyway. But a cheap/used BlackBerry now and look into pre-paid in Germany. You can sync all your contacts/calendar/tasks/notes from your current device to the new one. The only things that will be different are the PIN and the phone number you get on the pre-paid SIM. You can always have your Sprint number forward all calls to the new number once you get it.
