Angry Worthless Warranty - 04-29-2008, 06:23 PM

My 8310 has had trouble connecting via usb cord to my charger and my computer for the last few months. I bought the unit on Oct. 23, 2007. For the first 30 days there were no problems or very minor ones with the connection. Nothing that caused me to worry.

Lately, when I have plugged in the cord, the charge icon hasn't been showing unless I wiggle the cord and set it down just right. Today, I hooked it up to my computer to backup info and delete one program and install another and the process got to the "erase handheld" stage and would go no further.

So I went to my local ATT store where I bought this and found that they couldn't help me but gave me a number to call. I called an found out that because there is a physical defect with my phone that didn't appear until after the 30 days, my warranty does not cover it. I would have to pay $379 for a replacement through customer service, buy a new one at the current price, or just toss it and call it a day because you can't get insurance to cover these phones.

So basically, the warranty is worthless. Manufacturers defects beyond the 30 days are not covered and if the build quality on your unit is poor. You're basically SOL. I am extremely angry right now and want to know whose head to kick.

*moving to rants/raves*

Also call the number again, that should be considered normal wear and tear.

Cincinati Bell's extended extra special warranty fror $15 one time and $4 a month is supposed to cover it and it did twice and the third time it did not. Blackberry seems to use the cheapest mini USB ports. I had broken pins on two previous Pearls. I now use an old 8700 to charge and bluetooth to sync my new curve. I won't plug it in unless I have too.

There are several places that will fix/replace the port for $70-$75 (Horizon in Canada))I am going to try to swap the usb port on my Pearl myslef then pay to have it unlocked if I don't destroy it.

If you look closely at different USB ports you will notice the top of the Blackberry's (after the 8700) there are open groves for the pins, most others I see on devices are closed on the top. I think if they went back to the older one this wouldn't be an issue. With as many complaints as I have seen regarding this issues I can't believe they don't consider it Manufacturers Defect.

Default That wasn't what they told me. - 05-15-2008, 12:42 PM

When I called the number given to me by the AT&T store, the customer rep told me my warranty was for software problems only. Any physical problems would not be covered. I could pay $300 plus and they would ship me a refurbished one but those were my only choices.

I'm not too sure about AT&T, but a buddy of mine had the USB port go bad on two 8830 devices (Verizon) and they replaced it with a refurbished device under the manufacturer warranty.

RIM has a one year warranty on all of their Blackberrys. The only time the warranty will not cover the damage is if it is dust under the screen or physical damage done be the user, such as a cracked screen or liquid damage.
