Default Manufacturer Overturned Screw During Assembly - 05-02-2008, 11:28 AM

First rant...here goes.

A few days after I got my BB (8310 Curve), I noticed a slight crack in the upper left hand corner. It almost looked like a stress fracture to me, and it was more of an indentation than a crack. It got bigger as the days went on and finally a crack appeared where the indentation had been, and another indentation showed up. That indentation then enlarged until finally I had a "V" shaped crack in the upper left hand corner.

This puzzled me because I had never dropped it. I quizzed the kids and they swore they had not touched it. I took it to AT&T knowing they would dispute my assertion that it was a manufacturing defect, and they did not disapoint. So, I ordered up a new case and a screwdriver to fix the thing myself since the piece of tape I put on the crack was irritating me to say the least.

I watched the video and successfully took the BB apart. (I did get a spec of dust or 2 under the screen cover which is annoying but not critical.) When I got the cover off, it was apparent what had caused the crack: when the BB was assembled, the left screw was over-torqued. The female end of the screw housing was badly damaged and the cracks in the casing emanated from the screw recepticle. It was clear once I saw it from the inside and should be clear to anyone who has ever taken electronics apart and put them back together what had caused it.

Anyway, I don't expect any love from AT&T on the issue, but I was wondering if this had happened to anyone else. It seems like it would be a major fluke - just lucky I guess heh heh.

If your thumbs don't hurt, you're not doing it right.
