Their unusual looking but I love the fact that they put paddle shifters on a 71hp car.
In town (not very big) we have atleast 3 of them I see around town, one convertible.

I'm seriously considering cycling. I'm green to the sport, but a co-worker has been trying to convert me from motorcycling to cycling for years. With the current gas prices, I'm considering my first 'real' road bike. I had no idea they were so expensive, therefore I'm on the lookout for a retro model until I can justify spending what I usually would as a downpayment on a motorcycle. I will definitely need some conditioning prior to riding 16 miles each way too and from work, but there are a couple park and rides along the way to accommodate.

you can get a very nice bike for pretty cheap. Look for last years models typically in August I think many go on sale

16 miles is easier than many think some will depend on you conditioning if you are reasonably in shape won't be a problem. Get proper cycling shorts I promise you won't regret them. It is worth spending extra for good quality shorts. Your tail ed will thank you

Your saying that Oil companies have been working on these alternatives for years? Thats great then they should have something to show for it, but as of yet they don't. Its the automakers that are showing their hand and improving mileage.

Again read my two examples and tell me how the free market helped all the sub-prime home owner that now have lost their homes because of predatory lending practices? How about all the people who paid Billions in electric bills because Enron and others manipulated prices. Free market does work but it has to have some regulation, if not you run into the days of Robber Barons (history lesson there).

Coal can solve only some of the problem, the cleanest coal burning plant still is not healthy. But it is a good fuel that we have in this country. Oil is different, they say that the Dakotas and Montana have oil but no published amounts are out there.

But again it boils down to: Exxon stands to make $40+ Billion this year. Why would they want to change anything? They definitely would not willingly change anything that would lower their profit in the long run. That is where regulation can step in.
Perhaps they need to be forced to drill in Montana? whatever.

Still the answer is hydrogen. BBC NEWS | Business | Honda makes first hydrogen cars
I agree, the current supposed "free market" isn't working the way it should, it's not a free market when you have a small group of people manipulating supply and demand and speculating value to increase their own wealth and lie to people to keep investment money coming in while transferring their own money to other investment areas. Suprised nobody has mentioned the speculation arena that is pretty much left unchecked in this whole gas price increase.

Bear and Stearns is a perfect recent example of this trend and there's also a recent story of congress considering a bill to restrict speculation markets in the oil industry, which of course is putting a bunch of people on wall street up in arms.
