Default Getting calls from 866-463-3018 Let's do something about it!!! - 12-29-2008, 11:36 AM

I've been getting calls from 866-463-3018 (one ring only) which when called back is Sprint trying to sell you services. This is clearly some sort of dodgy reverse advertising scheme that sprint has brought upon us. Probably gets around any "Do Not Call" barriers as you actually call them to get the advert.

This totally insults my intelligence and that coupled with the "text messaging breakdown" has me fuming at Sprint. As a result I've sent this messge to my Sprint dealer and I am posting it here so that others who are as peeved as I am will do the same. This might send a strong message to Sprint not to screw with us. Here's the message.

--- quoted message ---

For the past 2 weeks or so I've been getting calls from 8664633018 and if I call them back it's Sprint trying to sell me services. It is apparent that they are doing some sort of shady reverse advertising scheme as the call only rings the phone once so you can't answer it. They are betting that you will call them back and even thank you for returning their call. This is shady and deceptive. Please forward this message to those at sprint and let them know that a few more of these stunts along with the broken text messaging issue that all 8350i users are suffering from has resulted in us wanting a 1 month credit for all services on our account. Please have someone at Sprint contact us directly to discuss our future with Sprint.

Not a good way to ring in the new year.

--- end quoted message ---

Why not create a contact for them and that way you will know its them and just not call back. Everyone else should do this as will so that you don't get caught "off guard".

That's very under-handed and chances are you paying for that callback as well. I'm glad that our carriers here in Jamaica don't do that sort of thing (as far as I know), and I don't think they would either as we would surely boycott their service.

If I don't recognize the number or it says "unknown" then I don't answer and let it go to voicemail. if they leave a message I'll listen to it but if they don't leave a message I delete it and don't even worry about calling them back, afterall, if it's not important enough to leave a voicemail message than I guess they shouldn't be calling so why call them back?

Seems pretty simple, don't call them back! If it is actually something important, they will leave a message. If it is reverse advertising, it obviously works, because you keep calling them back.

Stop calling them!!

Just a shot in the dark, but have you notified Sprint that you wish to opt out of these marketing calls? AT&T has a section in your online account where you can opt in our out of marketing via email, SMS, or voice calls.... I imagine Sprint must have some method of allowing you to do this as well.

I normally don't call anyone back who doesn't leave a message, but after a series of these 800 calls I just had to know who was scamming me. Unfortunatly I found out... My own cell phone provider. Disheartening. If I ignore them, them pretty soon there will be more. If we squash them like a bug there's a chance it won't happen as much in the future.

From Q&A: The National Do Not Call Registry

Quote:
#10 Can I register my cell phone on the National Do Not Call Registry?

Yes, you may place your personal cell phone number on the National Do Not Call Registry. The registry has accepted cell phone numbers since it opened for registrations in June 2003. There is no deadline to register a home or cell phone number on the Registry.

You may have received an email telling you that your cell phone is about to be assaulted by telemarketing calls as a result of a new cell phone number database; however, that is not the case. FCC regulations prohibit telemarketers from using automated dialers to call cell phone numbers. Automated dialers are standard in the industry, so most telemarketers don’t call consumers on their cell phones without their consent.

In that 800Notes website, someone posted this: "you have to set your Sprint telemarketing preferences to NONE in your profile... something they don't tell you about. mine were not set at all, which tells me the snuck it in so i would not kmow to set it to no..."

Also you said you emailed your Sprint dealer. Not sure what that means, but contacting Sprint directly might give better results.

Honestly, Sprint seems to be run by a bunch of incompetent folks. The other big providers are gaining users and they've been shrinking for years.
