Curve - Sound on Calls Not So Good -

I just got a Curve from AT&T and the sound when listening to calls absolutely stinks. It sounds like the person is speaking with a cheese cloth over their mic.
This is my first blackberry and the sound is really intolerable. So much so that I may just return it.
Maybe I am spoiled coming from an SE w810i where the sound was great but I had to ask my friend to repeat himself 3 times when I spoke with him.
Is there a setting I can change?
