Unhappy Help me out (cingular/at&t or whomever they are today) - 07-04-2007, 08:43 PM

Hi all I'm new here and hoping someone can help me out.

I'm an "old" AT&T customer before the "Cingular" buy. Long story short, I just purchased a BB 8800 off ebay with the intent on using it, although, I don't have it just yet (should have it in a few days).

I called AT&T or whoever the hell they are today and they said that I'm quote "on the old plans" and I would have to upgrade to the "new plans".

All I want is to use the blackberry and add the email/internet features to my existing plan. Why does AT&T/Cingular make it this difficult?

Anyone here have any suggestions? If so, I'm all ears.

BTW, nice site and thanks in advance for the help!

Cheers, Tim

What branded 8800 did you buy? Cingy or ATT? If uyou bouight a Cingular BlackBerry, you may need to go to the "new" plans, like he said.

They're going to want you to upgrade to a current plan in order to add BB data, current combo discount and lock you in for another X years. They'll probably want to upgrade your SIM card too unless you have at least a 64K one. And really, it's for the best if your plan and SIM are that old, for ease of support and quality of service reasons. However, it may well be possible to add BB data on to your plan, but finding a rep willing to do it may prove futile.

Ok now that actually makes a bit more sense to me. I guess at this juncture, since I have an "Older" SIM card, will they charge me to upgrade to a "new" SIM or is that something that I can get on my own? As mentioned, I bought the 8800 on Ebay and it doesn't come with a SIM card and I made an ASSumption that I could use my current SIM card. Thanks!

P.s. I have a Motorola RAZR phone now. Is that the "newer" SIM card? Sorry for the dumb question but figured I'd ask.

The newest SIM card has a flame ball 3G logo on it. The one before that was orange with Cingular branding and said 64k on it somewhere. There may be an even newer one now with ATT and the 3G flame ball. When I bought my TyTN off eBay, I just marched in the store with my old SIM in hand and asked for a new 3G SIM for an LG CU500 I just ordered off the Cingular website and they simply handed it to me. Hint: I never ordered no stinking LG!

Thanks for that info! Do you think they will just hand me a new SIM free of charge though? LOL. My SIM I have now is VERY old by the way.......

I doubt they will just offer you one since you're on such an old plan and out of contract, no?

That is why you have to update your plan. You need to add Blackberry Data services, which are different then the data service your Razr used.
