Default GPRS Connection charges in Germany... - 07-24-2007, 06:19 AM

I live in Hong Kong and subscribe through Vodafone here. Received my bill after traveling in Germany. WOW...despite not using the device to send/receive mail, was charged about US$1 every hour by the carrier (Vodafone, coincidentally). That's over $20 /day for no use.

My carrier explained that there's a minimum connection charge and that even though I didn't use the device to send/receive...it will periodically connect (for what reason, no one could tell me). Each time, generating a connection charge.

When I roam in other countries (Europe), I don't seem to have this issue. is this a germany thing? a voda-germany thing?

Isn't the BB a 'PUSH' device whereby data is pushed to it, only when there is data to push?

can any of your experienced BB travelers shed any light on this?

thanks!

Can't respond to the billing question, but on the technical question, seems to me the blackberry being a mobile device is going to at minimum periodically connect just to tell the network, "I'm here."

That's exactly what happens. Now, $1 seems to be excessively high, but I'm assuming you're talking about HKD and not USD, so it may not be as bad.

It's 0.10 HK dollar with a 100kb minimum (per connection). It connected every hour (exactly xx:13) which means I got charged HK$10 per hr (actually US$1.30 !)

Anyway..it appears it's just one of those things I'll have to either live with or pass on using..

thanks everyone!
