Default Desktop Manager Woes

Please Login to Remove!

I have a new Pearl. I can't get it to synch with anything. I have used Palm desktop for years and tried exporting the info but I get an error. I tried switching devices and my pal,/treo option is greyed out. I'm about ready to throw this thing against the wall! It's a shame it doesn't easily synch with Palm desktop!

What are you trying to sync your BlackBerry with? It doesn't sync with Palm Desktop at all.

You said you tried to export your data from Palm Desktop. What were you going to import the data into?

For Windows users, the most common and easiest software to sync your BlackBerry with is Microsoft Outlook. I would suggest you get that. if you don't have it already.

As far as switching from a Treo to BlackBerry... to make the transition simpler, you should forget everything you know about the Treo. The two devices aren't even remotely similar. Trying to equate them is what's causing you to want to throw the BlackBerry at a wall.

Well, I first tried synching with Outlook Express. BBDesktop MGr sees it. It sees the BB and starts and then nothing happens. The Desktop Manager also has something called Switch Device Wizard. it says it can migrate from an existing BB or a Palm or Palm Desktop. I have both devices plugged in via USB, my computer recognizes them but there are no options available on Desktop Mgr.
I also tried exporting my address book to a file, which is very common, but Desktop MGr won't accept it.

I just wanted to follow up. I called Verizon and surprisingly, they seemed to really want to help. I think used to be just nasty but my recent dealings with them have been pleasant and productive! Anyway, they couldn't figure it out and passed me on to a BB tech who was also confused. She said not to use the migration tool. Excuse me? Why include it? Since I've registgered and you have my email and contact info, why not send out a notice not to use it? Anyway, she then said you need to export from Palm to Outlook to Blackberry. SHe also said I couldn't just export the info from Palm to a file that I could import or synch to BB. I told her this was too funky and that I think I wanted to return the phone and she was really nice and offered to have an expert call me tomorrow. We'll see.
The software is slow and pokey and seems to drag my whole computer down. Finding out it's funky, on top of this steep learning curve, is discouraging. I was all set to really give SureType a try. We'll see what they say tomorrow but it shouldn't have to be this hard.

I too, used Palm Desktop. However, I also used Outlook. I simply sync'd my palm with Outlook (not express) and then sync'd to BB. This was 2 1/2 years ago. I've never looked back.

This is the app that BB told me not to use!

I just saw in another thread that Outlook 2000 doesn't work.
So if I have Palm Desktop (which is so simple and stable, I've been using w/o a palm for years, just as an organizer) and Outlook 2000, which I don't even use, I can't do this as far as I can tell.

I sort of feel like i'm reinventing the wheel!

Some anecdotal information suggests Desktop Manager can work with Outlook Express, but I haven't tried. Most people with a BB tend to have a copy of MS Office (which more of often than not) includes a license for Outlook XP (or later) which works well with Desktop Manager and the BlackBerry.

A standalone license for Outlook, Lotus Notes (or even ACT! or certain versions of Lotus Organizer) isn't that badly priced. Need to weight what your time is worth. Like JC hinted at, using a late model, full Version of Outlook is falling-off-on-a-chair easy. It's fairly easy for a novice to set up even.

Uninstall Desktop Manager 4.3 and install Desktop Manager 4.2 SP2. That will sync with Outlook 2000 nicely. 4.2 SP2 is a much more refined Desktop Manager than 4.3 anyway.

I agree, it would be nice if Palm Desktop was a supported PIM for the BB. The OP is right, it's a fairly capable PIM application (also backup and recovery is pretty straightforward on Palm Desktop). I always like PD's option for password protected memos.

Thanks. I'm downloading now and will give it go. I just want to confirm, this will work with the Pearl 8130, right?

Default hmmm

hey its the season..... so lets go

the switch device is greyed out becouse you have an incompatible palm desktop software with your bb desktop manager currently the program you need is the palm desktop manager 4.1.4 this is the one that is compatible with the desktop manager so download that palm desktop sync it with your old palm and then go ahead and chuck that palm away couse all you need is the palm desktop. now go ahead and while the palm desktop is open open up your dtm and then go ahead and run switch device wizard. it should not be greyed out it would now be a clickable option.

still doesnt work throw your arms in the air and lets go to the round the worl alternative....

go ahead and export your palm address/contacts into a vcard and then create a yahoo account and then import the vcard there then go ahead and syncronize your bb dtm 4.2.2 version with yahoo. make sure its the bbdtm 4.2.2 as this onwars will be the only ones that will sync with yahoo.

doesnt work as well in the calendar but if you find a way to export calendar from the palm desktop then you would be able to import to the yahoo and then sync with desktop manager...

phew...

Somehow I downloaded the right combination of things and was able to export from palm desktop to outlook to the BB, all on my laptop.
But you're right, i have palm desktop 4.2,

Of course the real revelation is how much i love the pearl with all this info on it! Wow and wow again. I can look up a name, send an email, call any of the numbers and even get GPS instructions. Entering all this would have been a nightmare (and full of mistakes).

thank you all.

Default Bang on!

I signed on to this group just to tell Silentmax "THANK YOU!!"

Your information was exactly what I needed. I downloaded desktop 4.1.4 from Palm and everything went through perfectly.

We, whose blackberrys almost drove us insane, are in your debt.

All the best,

Tracy
