Thumbs up Useful - Latest OS for ALL Models - 12-22-2007, 08:47 AM

The following is a list of the latest version OS available from the 202 BlackBerry hosted Device Software Download Sites and 2 non RIM sites as of 2/18/2009 7:31:09 AM:
Notes:
  • The information above is gathered by a script that visits each provider site listed in the link at the top of the page that use BlackBerry to host their files, selects each model available, and gets the first version listed. If you are aware of discrepancies, PM me.
  • Only sites which have the latest available version are listed. Models may be listed at other sites, but do not have the latest version available.
  • Version numbers listed should match the version number in the About screen under Options - typically the third line down, and listed as vX.X.X.X (Platform x.x.x.x)
  • Both t-Mobile and Verizon host their own software download sites. The US t-Mobile and Verizon site info is gathered irregularly manually, and may be out of date. PM me if you are aware of newer versions available from those two providers.
  • Non US t-Mobile sites and other sites like O2 that do not use BlackBerry to host their firmware, as well as sites not listed on the Download Sites page (like TIM and Bouygues Telecom) are not included in the scan at all, and will not be included unless they hosts their files on BlackBerry's site AND are listed on the Download Sites page.

That's the package version, Dawg.
When referring to OS versions, you typically refer to the applications version... which would be 4.2.1.110.
The list above is correct.

Jerry, I think you're missing the 8120 from the list.

Well put together list. We have a list similar to this but it doesn't get kept up all the time by the OP and it doesn't have links like this. If you're willing to keep it updated I'll sticky it.

I know this stuff changes weekly as I tried to keep up with all the edited .alx files for a while. I couldn't keep up.

Question 12-22-2007, 01:54 PM

Here is a noob-ish question I have been wondering for a bit...

Is there an issue putting another company's 'update' into my BB? For example, I have a Verizon 8703e and the above post says that Telus has a newer OS than I have installed on my BB.

Thanks... good stuff.

not at all... as long as you stay model-consistent, i.e. 8703 to 8703, 8100 to 8100. And always follow the instruction in the Sticky Threads about deleting the vendor.xml file.

Thanks. Is it worth grabbing onto every update? I'm running 4.2.1.106 and I'm curious whether I should wait for a more significant change than upgrading to a version 0.0.0.004 higher than what I have!

4.2.1.179 sounds like a package version. These are listed by app version (which is how most here refer to them.) Do you know which app version you are looking for?

Who carries it? If it's only carried by t-Mobile (it isn't listed on the US t-Mobile site), it won't appear on the list.

Although the process takes about 30 minutes, it's completely automated - even the content of the post (in BB code) is automated, so I just have to kick it off.

I won't promise to do it weekly, but I will try to update it at least once a month.

I'd scan the forums for the exact details for this procedure, but I'm pretty sure all you need to do is to make sure you do NOT have any other firmware for the model installed other than the version you want, and then rename or delete the file C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader\Vendor.xml.

The Application loader should now recognize that it has newer firmware available for your device automatically, and if it doesn't come up automatically when you connect, it should offer the update if you start it manually.

No such version for ANY model! There's 4.2.1.79 for the 8800 from AT&T, but the AT&T 8100 is currently on 4.2.1.96. Get it from here:

It was released in Europe before the US.
O2 UK, Orange UK, Telefonica (Spain), TIM (Italy), Bouygues Telecom (France) all have the device.

I believe the first US carrier to launch the 8120 is Suncom (T-Mobile), although it may not have officially released in the US yet. Q108?

Good catch!

Explanation:
The script gleans model info from this page:
BlackBerry Desktop and Device Software Download Sites
However, the 8820, 8120, and 8130 are not listed there. When I wrote the script I was able to set it add the 8820 and 8130 to the list of models to check for, but the 8120 had no providers and having it in the list was causing errors.

Now that there are providers for that model, I've added them to the list of models to check for.

O2 does not use BlackBerry to host their files, and TIM and Bouygues are not listed in the Providers page. The notes will be updated to be more clear on that issue.

Yes, the Alltel code will work on Verizon. All handheld code is written by RIM, and tested and released by the carriers on their own schedules.

Follow the instructions posted on Main Page - BlackBerryFAQ.com and you are good to go.

I did wonder about that the first time I downloaded an OS from another carrier. However, it's been 3 years and nobody's come knocking on my door.

Quick Question,
I have 8300 from AT&T, is it completely safe to download and install
# 8300 - 4.5.0.37 from Singapore and StarHub? I mean, will I lose any functionality, since these are specifically designed for that particular provider.
