Default Desktop Manager won't connect to email server

Desktop Manager won't connect to the email server. It shows the Server Status as offline. This has always been a bit flakey. Sometimes I've had to shutdown and restart my VPN connection a few times to get it to work but it now won't work at all. I've been planning to upgrade from V4.2 SP2 to V4.3 anyway so I did that and it still won't connect. Any idea what might cause this problem?

I upgraded to V4.3 and I am still experiencing random problems where it sometimes connects to the server and sometimes doesn't. Is there any way to determine what is causing this problem? The IT department doesn't have any idea. The server is always running and there are no other symptoms of a problem.

As I understand it the Desktopmanager connects to the BES via TCP Port 4101 which is always listening for that and other traffic, primarily from the Router Service but I was wondering if your VPN connection could be messing with that communication path.
