Default Modify firmware? - 04-25-2008, 09:49 AM

Is there anyway to modify the firmware on the blackberry? I see that bigger coporations such as EMC do this a buddy of mine who had a Curve from the same carrier doesn't any of the carriers applications they install in their firmware such as "setup wizard", and "e-mail settings", the icons aren't hidden either, but I can tell from looking at the Applications installed on his phone that he has quiet a few less than me.

I looked through the BPS manuals again (the online pdf's) and there is also no mention of how to modify the service book from BPS.

Is there anything on RIM's site or can somone explain what needs to be done?

Thanks
Andrew

you cannot modify the firmware of the device. you can change the operating system but that is all. the service books are pushed from the carrier or BES, and can be deleted from the device (though a reboot will push them back)

Hey Sith,

I understand that I can push the service book to the blackberrys from the server but how do I create a service book so I can push it?

As the same goes for the operating system?

Thanks
Andrew

the service books that can be pushed are ones that the server creates. as far as i know you cannot create your own.

Can they be edited?

Maybe I am missing here, is there some parts of the IT policy that are used to create the service book?

Thanks
Andrew

No; only the carriers can create them.

No, you can't edit service books. You don't have any control over them whatsoever, other than the ability to restrict some of them via IT Policy.

IT Policies aren't used to create or change service books.

This goes back to what I said in your other thread. You don't understand what a service book even is, yet you are insistent on there being some way for you to control them.
You don't even have a basic understanding of BES admin, so the questions you are asking don't even make much sense.

In other thread, you ask about using IT Policies to disable/delete icons such as Search, Setup Wizard, Alarm, etc...
This isn't even possible, and you were told that in your first reply in your other thread.
You choose to not accept that answer, based on you seeing a device from another company BES which doesn't have those items.

They were likely removed manually, or they were never installed in the first place.

I'll say it again.... you NEED to get some training on what the IT Policy settings are, and what they do. There's no short/quick answer for you here.

Thanks,

I just can't see a company who had to depoly over 4000 PDA's plugging each one to delete applications, or removing items off the service books manually. I honestly though RIM would make it easier!
