Default BIS desktop manager - license terms? - 06-17-2008, 08:04 PM

Good evening. I have been a lurker here for awhile as I research my device options. Prior to pulling the trigger on an 8130 (Verizon), I need some advice on the desktop manager's EULA.

I currently carry an older Windows Mobile PDA and use Activesync to keep my content current on a couple of machines (home and office.) I know this can also be done with a Blackberry by running BIS both @ home and @ work.

However, my office IT dept. is reluctant to install the BIS desktop manager software on my work machine. Something about the EULA specifically prohibiting a BIS installation in an office setting. Note that we aren't a BB shop and are not running BES, so that is not the issue.

I pressed him to be more specific on his licensing concern since we have other staff running various flavors of smart phone software (Palm, to be specific.) I also downloaded and read the entire BB EULA to see if I could determine where in the document it specifically prohibited a BIS installation in an office setting. I didn't find anything.

So, my question is for the expert BB users / administrators. Where, if anywhere, does this restriction exist? Or did it in the past, and has since been removed? I appreciate any tips/pointers. Unless this can be resolved, my only option is to carry a chunky WinMo device and I'd rather not .

Thanks in advance,
TOM

Wirelessly posted (8310)

Me either. My IT guy has it on his computer too. I am also BIS with no BES at work.

We have BES at work and our IT guys purposely install the DM for BIS use on computers because it prevents problems with email delivery.

Thanks for the replies. I don't want to paint the IT guy in a corner. He's been good to me and I appreciate getting quick response when I have issues. I also know that the general policy is to not install extraneous software unless it's needed for business reasons. I don't want to rock that boat either, but knowing that IT has intalled the Palm sync software on other machines makes me wonder why he's reluctant. Maybe he assumes there will be a crush of people looking for BB support. Honestly I'm surprised we don't already offer a corporate plan for managers / VPs.

Either way, I will work on him to see how this can happen. Having BIS at home only will do me absolutely no good, it's not worth my effort if I can't blend my data. If I'm forced to stick with Exchange & Activesync, the one possible WinMo phone I'd accept is the SMT5800, but it's significantly thicker, heavier and more expensive.

Regards,
TOM
