Default Problems with email

I have had two different issues with my email on my 8310 Blackberry.
1. When I first got the device (a few weeks ago) I was able to receive emails sent to an outside email account but picked up by my Blackberry. Within the last two weeks I no longer receive these emails either to my Blackberry or PC. They happen to be sent from another Blackberry.

2. I sometimes will get an email to my Blackberry, and it is not then delivered to my PC. Also I have had problems with looking at an email on my Blackberry, closing the email and then it is suddenly gone. I don't choose to delete it, but I can't find it any longer.

I'm a newbie to this... so I'm hoping someone can tell me where I am going wrong. I've tried looking at help files and manuals and didn't get anywhere.

Use a mail client to access your email? ...such as Microsoft Outlook?
Probably best to ensure "Leave a copy of the message on the mail server" is enabled since its the most common issue.
