I am the author of the sticky.
In what way, is the download confusing? You have to select the specific BlackBerry device in order to download the BlackBerryOS.
1. Go to the sticky.
2. Click the appropriate Download link.
3. NEXT STEP (IMPORTANT): In the pulldown, select the DEVICE You have.
4. Click Next
5. NOW, you can download the operating system for that particular device.
Let me know how I should change the wording of my FAQ in order to make it more clear. I made some minor modifications again. Please read the first page of this sticky again and let me know what you think of my clarification.

brettule,
Thanks. I've integrated these links into my FAQ.
The best downloads pages I can find for Telecom Italia was by modifying the known Telecom Italia download URL's so I view the directories containing all released 7230 and 7290 files. Looks like 4.x has not yet been released by Telecom Italia for 7230, but it has been released for the 7290.
http://www.wseurope.com/tim/7230/
http://www.wseurope.com/tim/7290/
Also, here's a listing of other BlackBerryOS Downloads via Dynoplexs' website:
http://www.dynoplex.com/rimos.shtml
What you MIGHT be able to do is use javaloader to copy the italian language from one BlackBerryOS to another -- NO guarantees this will work or not, but if you are willing to hack a BlackBerry, use "javaloader -usb dir" to view a listing of operating system files stored on a BlackBerry. Try to identify the file that represents the Italian language (I suggest doing this on an Italian OS 4.0 7290 instead of an Italian 3.7 OS 7230 though, since that is more likely to be compatible). Copy the file to your computer (Type javaloader -help for a listing of command line options, I think). Switch BlackBerries to your 7230 upgraded to a foreign carrier's operating system. Now use javaloader to load the language file back onto your BlackBerry, and viola -- HOPEFULLY it now can use the Italian language (after setting this in the Options, I believe). You will have to get the javaloader.exe command line utility from the RIM SDK, or grab it off somewhere on the net. This javaloader trick is exactly how people managed to copy themes from one BlackBerry to another -- for example, using the Orange theme on a T-Mobile BlackBerry. The same probably can be done with languages. If you do not have a 7290 in access, try your 3.7 Italian language file. Copy it to your computer before upgrading to OS 4.0. Upgrade to OS 4.0 from another carrier. Then copy the language file back. If this doesn't work, and you need Italian, you can downgrade back. (Make sure you have the downgrade instructions handy - from this thread)

How do I get the software physically onto the device? I've downloaded the OS4 software, I saved it to my desktop (On my PC). How do I get it onto my Blackberry now? *Confused and not very good at computer stuff* My 7230 Voda UK is currently OS3.7
Thanks all.

Help! Upgraded from 3.8 to 4.02 (T-mobile), now phone is diabled -
02-05-2006, 02:04 PM
Did the upgrade according to T-Mobile's instructions. Upgrade went well, but when it was finished, phone is now not working. Should have left well enough alone, but didn't.
I went through the list of changes that the software was going to make, and I am very sure I left the 'phone' action- 'remove' unchecked.
What would anyone suggest? Internet works fine, address book is still there. I notice that Bluetooth is no longer available. The icon is there, but selecting it doesn't do anything.
Basically, I just want to restore what I had. Please let me know if anyone has any ideas.

Mark thanks! The http://www.wseurope.com/tim/7290/ URL is just what I needed. I actually took a stab at this URL a week or so back after seeing the 7230 directory but got a "page can not be displayed" error on my inital attempt so I figured it didn't exist. It actually looks like their DNS might be a little bit flaky, 50% of the time it's giving me this so where I was unlucky you were successful.
Fantastic, thanks once again.

I am considering getting an unlocked 7290 on ebay and connecting to O2 in Ireland. Is there a 4.0 upgrade available or do I need to use another carrier. What effect will that have on any of the settings/operation of the b'berry

Please post this in a separate thread. The short answer is any color phone can be upgraded to 4.0.

Mirror for file ? -
02-08-2006, 02:17 AM
I downloaded the file from the RIM site once (it took half an hour), and got an error when I went to use it, which I found out was because of a truncated download.
I'm downloading again, but getting the amazing speed of 2.3KB/s, so it's going to take forever, if it even downloads fully.
Can someone recommend a mirror site for this file, or at least a program that you can use with firefox or IE that automatically resumes the file and works ? I'd use wget if I could get a real address for the file, but I can't.
At this rate, it's going to take me more than 4 hours to download the file, if it works........

OS 4.0 for a generic 7100 (Bought directly from BlackBerry) -
02-26-2006, 10:01 PM
Anyone knows where I can download the OS 4.0 software upgrade for a 7100 that was bouth directly from BlackBerry?
I cant see that listed on the original post, and I think this would be helpful even for people with 7100t or 7100g who wants to remove the provider branding/settings from their phones.

Regardless of carrier or who you bought it from, you can install any of them, provided it supports your device and you delete the vendor.xml file.

technically yes 6502p but obviously it's better to go with the wireless provider since that's the rev they support from a tech support p.o.v. (and possibly due to some peculiarities in their network)

EDIT: got it, sorry for the confusion. Fix: reverse steps 2 and 3 below.
Original post:

sorry for the oft-asked question, from a n00b, but...
I am trying to upgrade my 7130e from 4.1.0.117 verizon to 4.1.0.207 BellM. So far I have seen everyone talk about the vendor.xml file, but I have yet to see a step-by-step list of instructions for upgrading. Here's what I did, and the result:
1) Installed Blackberry Desktop Software that came with my phone
2) Renamed the vendor.xml file in C:\PF\CF\RIM\AppLoader to vendor.xml.old
3) Installed the newest software from BellM
4) Connected my blackberry, ran the desktop manager, blackberry connects to PC
5) Wait--nothing happens for upgrading.
6) Disconnect device, remove battery, reboot--still nothing.
Now, if I go to "About Desktop Manager" in the Desktop Manager, under "Device Software" tab the version lists as 4.1.0.207 (the BellM version), but when I look in the About on the BB, it still says 4.1.0.117 (VZW version). Sorry, but what else do I have to do?

Vendor.xml is deleted *AFTER* you finish loading all the software. And it must be deleted each time you install handheld software.

Desktop Data1.cab corrupt on installation -
03-10-2006, 08:34 PM
I've downloaded Desktop 4.1 from Verizon and BB for my new 7130e. I start the installation and get an Error 1335 data1.cab required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be used. I've clean my local settings temp folder, stopped and started system restore. Any ideas? I've been at this since this morning.

Be patient, it can take a while for the device to boot after the upgrade completes.

This is normal -- The first boot can take more than 30 minutes.
Do NOT remove the battery at this stage yet -- this may damage the upgrade and you will have to start over again (javaloader -usb wipe). If the hourglass is spinning for several hours then you may as well have to, but be prepared you have the device wiping instructions and then try again.

Rogers have 8700 4.1.0.284 up as of 17-Mar-06. Anyone got ideas as to fixes over the 4.1.0.206 we have on our units?
Also - any Rogers insiders got a clue on 4.1 for 7100 and 7290, and 4.0.2 for 7780 and 7280? Don't want to use non-Rogers firmware as I don't own them!

I'm trying to decide whether to upgrade the BB os. I have a 7100G connected to my work BES and would like to understand the risk/benefit of upgrading. My application modules are 4.0.0.219. I would like to have the latest os, but don't want to screw up a good thing. I could use some advice. Thanks.

Desktop Manager 4.1 SP1 for Rogers 8700r? -

Can anyone tell me what changes/improvements Service Pack 1 provides? Also, why is the Rogers site so slow to provide updates? The handheld code on their site is still .206.

In the OS download guidance from Nextel & RIM, we are told to download and install BOTH the desktop and handheld software files. They both show up on my PC as Desktop Manager.
Does anyone know why we are supposed to install both? I ran into conflicts when I was using a 7520. They were resolved when I removed one of the two programs. Either one seemed to work ok.
