This is an excellent thread, thanks. I just tried to downgrade the o/s on my 8700g from 4.1.0.194 (suncom) to 4.1.0.175 (Cingular). It all seemed to work fine, including telling me it was doing all the various things it was supposed to, but when it finished (even after a battery out reset), it is still at 194 and still shows the Suncom logo on startup.
Any thoughts as to what I might have done wrong?
Also, I'm trying this downgrade to see if it might solve my BlueTooth problem (although I don't hold out much hope). I’ve now been trying in vain to get this 8700g to correctly work with modern Bluetooth headsets, it works fine with old headsets (Jabra BT200, Parrot CK3100), but has a severe audio problem with modern units (Jabra BT250, Motorola HS500) where you can hear the audio in the background but it is drowned out by a repeating pulse of static, .5 seconds of loud static, then .5 seconds ok, then .5 seconds of static, repeat.
It seems to me that I might be dealing with a faulty unit, but the fact that this works with the older headsets just fine does make me wonder if this is software.
I did post on this in the BlueTooth forum but got no responses, so I'm trying here where the software gurus live. Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance,
Ian

That's true. The question is is it an updated version of the 4.1.0.344 OS that came with the 8703e. Notice the wording on their web site "updated 9-25-06" When the 7130e was posted before the 3/8/06 upgrade it did not mention upgraded.

I think we might be getting a little too crazy here....If it were updated, it would not be .344, it would be .345+ etc...

Bell handheld 8703e software posted -
10-04-2006, 10:13 AM
Bell has posted their version . . . finally. It is newer than Verizon, but older than Sprint: 4.1.0.492/4.1.0.392/2.2.0.165
Judging by the version numbers, it's pretty similar to Sprint's

what is the difference between downloading the desktop software and instialling the actual BB handheld OS.
I would like to upgrade my OS on my new 8703e to get the Zen theme that is the talk of the town.
I deleted the "vendor.xml" but cannot find the ".alx" to modify. it is NOT on my PC?
Please advise

go to the top of this thread and click on sprint . . . . but the sprint and bell versions are so close in numbering that there is probably no significant difference in features

4.1 Operating System -
10-07-2006, 07:07 PM
I downloaded the new version of the Desktop software and all was working find.
I downloaded the 4.1 Operating System and tried to install on my 7290. Everytime I tried the Application Installer would lock up. I tried several times, rebooting between attempts but I could never get it to install.
Any ideas what I might be doing wrong or tips that will make it work.
Thanks,
Rob

i downloaded the 4.1 package...
Package Version: 4.1.0.314
Consisting of:
* Applications: 4.1.0.292
* Software Platform: 1.8.0.144
* File name: 7290M_PBr4.1.0_rel314_PL1.8.0.144_A4.1.0.292_SunCo m.exe
* File size: 43.3 MB
* Date Posted: 13-Apr-2006
Note: The Software Platform and Applications version numbers can be found under Options-About screen on the handheld.
and then opened the .exe on my computer...am i supposed to do it from my blackberry? Isn't the desktop manager supposed to transfer it over? If so...it's not showing up??...sorry this is my first blackberry and i can't figure out how to update the OS...it's still showing 4.0 in the applications screen

I figured it out...turned out i had gotten my BB off ebay and was unlocked from t-mobile so downloaded their vendor.xml...simple delete fixed it
EDIT:
ok...the install and everything seemed to work...but once it was done with that...it's been on the little rotating hour glass screen for aabout 10 mins now...is that normal?

Hi,
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this but the first link for O2 no longer works the below link is the one I was taken to where the software is available for download.
BlackBerry from O2 - Help and support
Also if anyone had a Voda Pearl the software is available now on the link found on the first page, it appears to be the same App/Platform as the Rogers version however.

upgrading OS with a different carrier -
10-25-2006, 06:23 PM
I have the cingular 8700c and i know it was cingulars choose to make their device not MMS capable. My question is that is there a carrier's OS that is MMS capable. I thought the T-Mobile one was but i don't see the option. If i do find out and install it on the the device will it make it MMS capable. Or is there hardware alongside that, and not let me do MMS.
make sense

MMS as a capability has been available since OS 4.0 (roughly). However, MMS can be enabled/disabled by the operator via service books, so if you're not able to send/receive MMS from your 8700c, ensure you have an MMS service book first.
Hopefully that makes sense.

BB7250 upgrade OS on Bell Mobility -
10-30-2006, 04:31 PM
I did everything to the letter, and saw the last screen advising the OS upgrade to v4.1.0.303 was successful, I hit close and then disconnected the BB
It seems to have started a reboot now I see the hourglass for close to 1 hour and then success it seems to be working fine. Wow very different desktop on the handheld
Now off to the Bell store to flash it for EVDO
any recommended stores in downtown Toronto to do the flash?
Great forum tonnes of info!!!

BB8700g Brand -
11-09-2006, 04:41 AM
Hello BB-user,
I have used the note from Mark Rejhon in order to change my BlackBerry 8700g OS to the actual version, thanks for that, it worked out perfectly. But, one of the aims I followed has been to change the brand my BB is designed for (T-Mobile in my case)! I tried to upgrade to an OS Version from a different provider, but it did not change. Is there any possibility to run a GPRS Browser with a different SIM Card?
Thanks,
REM

If you change the OS but delete the vendor file it will still show the original OS flash screen, i.e. T-Mobile unless I am mistaken, BB Gurus please correct me if I am wrong.

You can not change the original vendor branding. If it was a Bell branded BlackBerry it will ALWAYS ben a Bell branded BlackBerry. For example, the power on screen can not be changed. Even by applying a "different carrier's" version of the software.

My wish for this thread... -
11-13-2006, 02:12 PM
I wish this thread would go back to the old format of listing out the versions. I know it was probably a pain to maintain, but when looking to fill my "run the latest version" fetish, I have to go clicking around to LOADS of carriers.
One compromise might be a "latest known version by hardware", where the latest 7280 is linked, the latest 8700 is linked, etc. Rather than maintaining the current version for each carrier for each unit, simply link the latest for each unit, regardless of carrier.
957 => 5820 => 7280 => 7290 (UL) => 8820 (UL) => 9000 (UL/DB)

Another district heard from.
If we organize it by model, then people will complain that they want the link to their particular carrier.
No way to win. I guess people will have to deal with it. When a post comes out about a new version, it normally has the link directly to it. I know the new 8100 versions have all had it.

Ever thought of leaving BOTH on the thread. Both the link to the carriers OS page and then a different portion showing each model and the latest available for the model.
It's not rocket science....

Okay stupid question time, whats the point of uploading a different carriers version software to your blackberry? Seen some posts on page 1 about it and i don't feel like reading thru 17 pages to figure out the answer so can anyone just briefly tell me if there are any benefits?
